Kevin Arkadie, the Emmy-nominated writer and producer behind \u201cNew York Undercover\u201d and many other TV series, has passed away. He was 68.<\/p>\n

News of Arkadie\u2019s passing was shared by his family on social media Thursday. No cause of death was disclosed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis man right here was one of America\u2019s greatest storytellers,\u201d Arkadie\u2019s cousin, L True Green, wrote<\/a> in a social media post. \u201cHe has forever changed the landscape of creativity. From having an historic Broadway run, to writing for some of America\u2019s greatest television dramas. He is the reason I have remained in the arts as a writer today. May you rest in peace Cuzzo. Much love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arkadie was born and raised in Washington, D.C before moving with his family to Maryland, and eventually Texas. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a\u00a0BFA in acting after shifting from the film program to theatre. His theatrical roots brought him to New York City, where he started his career as a playwright with his first professional production of \u201cA Life Like the Rest,\u201d before going on to have his plays \u201cUp the Mountain\u201d and \u201cCorcoromasanti\u201d produced in New York and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

His work as a playright helped land Arkadie an assignment on Kevin Rodney Sullivan\u2019s \u201cKnightwatch\u201d on ABC, and after working on Fox\u2019s \u201cAlien Nation,\u201d Arkadie landed his first TV staff writing job on \u201cI\u2019ll Fly Away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The gig propelled Arkadie into the world of TV writing, where he went on to write episodes of \u201cDr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,\u201d \u201cLaw & Order,\u201d \u201cHomicide: Life on the Street,\u201d \u201cChicago Hope\u201d and \u201cNYPD Blue,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n

By 1994, Arkadie created \u201cNew York Undercover\u201d alongside Dick Wolf, which became the first police drama series to be lead by two people of color as Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo led the series. The police drama series, which also starred Patti D\u2019Arbanville-Quinn and Lauren V\u00e9lez, ran for four seasons on Fox, from September 1994 to February 1999.<\/p>\n

After co-creating \u201cNew York Undercover,\u201d Arkadie went on to write miniseries \u201cThe Temptations,\u201d as well as \u201cRescue 77,\u201d \u201cSoul Food,\u201d \u201cThe Shield,\u201d \u201cPlatinum,\u201d \u201cMiracle\u2019s Boys\u201d and \u201c1-800-Missing,\u201d among others. More recently, he developed and wrote BET\u2019s \u201cSacrifice,\u201d and had recent writing credits on OWN\u2019s \u201cAmbitions\u201d and \u201cThe Quad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the course of his career, Arkadie received two Emmy nominations for his work on ABC\u2019s \u201cNYPD Blue\u201d and CBS\u2019 \u201cChicago Hope,\u201d which scored outstanding drama series nominations in 1996 and 1998. <\/p>\n
