The Mars Volta vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala has teamed with drummer Steve Lyman on an experimental new record titled \u201cSIGNAL TO BURNING\u201c. Lyman\u2018s background and interests lie in jazz and electronica, influences he brings to the table in this adventurous new project. \u201cHOMECOMING\u201d is the lead single to arrive from that record and is streaming below. First, thank you to everyone especially the new folks for the kind words about HOMECOMING. It truly means a lot.<\/p>\n
This record has been three years in the making\u2026 or ten\u2026 or maybe thirty. I moved back to New York during COVID to re-immerse myself in jazz, but instead found myself deconstructing everything and reconnecting with the music that shaped me early on\u2014before jazz\u2014while finding my way into sound design and synthesizers for the first time.<\/p>\n
Jazz gave me a foundation, but this project is about stripping things back to get to the heart of what I really want to express. After a year of searching for the right producer, it became clear that I needed to step into that role myself. It\u2019s my first time producing, and hearing the finished music feels deeply meaningful.<\/p>\n
Working with Cedric has been a dream and a true meeting of shared vision. He\u2019s my favorite singer. Tigran Hamasyan and Nathan Schram brought profound depth and heart to this record, and I\u2019m endlessly grateful. I can\u2019t wait to share their contributions when the time comes.<\/p>\n
SIGNAL TO BURNING is about letting the old fall away to make space for something new\u2014a brutal and beautiful transformation we all move through in our own way. HOMECOMING is that moment when we stop proving ourselves and start living in alignment with what\u2019s already inside us.<\/p>\n
There are 14 songs on the record, with four singles leading up to the release on April 1. I\u2019m playing drums and synthesizers on most of the music, alongside some powerful contributions from the other musicians on a number of tracks.<\/p>\n
