I shall call it a Dueling Goaltas.<\/p>\n

Saturday, both Protas brothers scored on the same day for the first time as members of the Washington Capitals\u2019 organization. Aliaksei, 24, scored during the Washington Capitals\u2019 5-2 matinee loss to the Detroit Red Wings<\/a> while 19-year-old Ilya lit the lamp in incredible fashion as the Hershey Bears\u2019 mollywhopped the Bridgeport Islanders, 4-1<\/a>, later in the night.<\/p>\n

Both tallies were skill goals. And both players are Pros.<\/p>\n

Ilya Protas goal<\/p>\n

Ilya, currently serving as the Bears\u2019 first-line center, scored his 12th goal of his rookie AHL season, lighting the lamp with 6:29 remaining. The Belarusian forward dangled the puck past an Islanders defender before curling the puck toward the far post and sliding it under goaltender Henrik Tikkanen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no stopping that,\u201d Bears\u2019 victorious goaltender Mitch Gibson said on the Bears\u2019 telecast. \u201cHis reach, it\u2019s not the first time he\u2019s done it. He does it in practice all the time. It\u2019s scary for me during weekdays. Special player, incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s had a couple like that this year,\u201d added head coach Derek King. \u201cWe don\u2019t want him to score like that anymore because we might lose him. He\u2019s going to be a special player. I like how they\u2019re patient with him. It\u2019s not like, \u2018Oh, he scored two goals, let\u2019s call him up right away.\u2019 They\u2019re doing it the right way with this kid. If they stick to that, he\u2019s going to be a special player.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ilya also added an assist in the game, winning a puck battle along the end boards and finding Andrew Cristall streaking to the net. <\/p>\n

Little Pro, wearing his brother\u2019s old number 40, leads Hershey in points with 23 (12g, 11a) and sits fourth in scoring among all AHL rookies. He was a third-round pick of the Capitals in the 2024 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n

Aliaksei Protas goal<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Aliaksei ended John Gibson\u2019s shutout bid after hitting the far corner with a snipe down the left wing. The goal was scored 10:36 into the second period and narrowed the Red Wings\u2019 lead to 4-1.<\/p>\n

Big Pro now has 12 goals on the season \u2014 fourth best on the Capitals \u2014 and has 22 points (12g, 10a) in 35 games this season.<\/p>\n

He currently plays on the left wing of the Capitals second line. He was a third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n

After Ilya Protas\u2019s AHL debut on October 11, I foresaw this moment in history and asked him about it. (His brother scored two goals for the Capitals earlier in the evening.)<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you and Aliaksei both score on the same night, in the same organization, what should the nickname for it be?\u201d I asked before offering a few suggestions. \u201cA Double Pro? A Dueling Goaltas? Like, what would be a good nickname for it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d Ilya replied laughing. \u201cYou guys got better ideas than me, I think.\u201d <\/p>\n

A Dueling Protas it is. Congratulations, Protas brothers.<\/p>\n
