The funeral\u00a0has been\u00a0held in Manchester for the legendary\u00a0Stone Roses<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Primal Scream<\/a>\u00a0bassist Gary \u2018Mani\u2019\u00a0Mounfield.<\/p>\n

The Manchester music icon\u00a0passed away on November 20 at the age of 63<\/a>, with his family later confirming that\u00a0he died peacefully in his sleep from \u201crespiratory issues\u201d<\/a>\u00a0linked to the long-standing lung condition emphysema.<\/p>\n

He was laid to rest with a funeral at Manchester Cathedral today (December 22), with many of his friends and bandmates in attendance, including\u00a0Liam Gallagher<\/a>,\u00a0Ian Brown<\/a>,\u00a0 John Squire<\/a>,\u00a0Reni,\u00a0Bobby Gillespie<\/a>,\u00a0Bez<\/a>,\u00a0Paul Weller<\/a>, Mike Joyce,\u00a0Guy Garvey<\/a>,\u00a0Peter Hook<\/a>, Tim\u00a0Burgess<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Paul \u2018Bonehead\u2019 Arthurs<\/a>. Manchester United legends David Beckham and Gary Neville were also present.<\/p>\n

Fans of the musician lined the streets of Manchester city\u00a0centre, with many dressed in black or in Stone Roses t-shirts and\u00a0hoodies,\u00a0and\u00a0others\u00a0sporting the band\u2019s trademark bucket hats.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve just been out to pay our respects to Mani from the Stone Roses \/ Primal Scream as his funeral cortege passed though Heaton Moor.<\/p>\n

The funeral cortege travelled eight miles from Mani\u2019s home in Heaton Moor, Stockport, to the Cathedral, with the coffin covered in the iconic Jackson Pollock-influenced cover art of The Stone Roses\u2019 classic 1989 debut album, and also adorned with flowers spelling out \u2018Mani\u2019 and \u2018R Kid\u2019.<\/p>\n

Stone Roses\u00a0frontman\u00a0Ian Brown spoke at the ceremony. \u201cMani was like a brother to me, a musical comrade,\u201d he told the congregation. \u201cBeautiful soul and spirit. Mani was able to laugh his way through any darkness. He was the life and soul of any room he was in.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also suggested a campaign to have a 50ft gold statue of Mani enshrined in Manchester, which led to applause from the congregation.<\/p>\n

Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie also spoke: \u201cMani\u2019s warm and welcoming manner, treating me like an equal, made me feel like a million dollars, and I\u2019ll never forget that. No-one was too important to escape his laser-eye ability to cut the pretentious and self-important down to size, myself included.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis ability to make laughter out of any situation was our great value wherever we were in the world,\u201d Gillespie added. Comparing his aura to that of Manchester\u00a0United legend Eric Cantona, he said: \u201cMani\u2019s not dead,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0just gone. He will always live forever in my soul and mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the service ended, Liam Gallagher and Stone Roses members Reni and John Squire were among those to carry the coffin out of the cathedral.<\/p>\n

Manchester Evening News<\/a>\u00a0reported that a woman\u00a0appeared to be\u00a0detained by police at the funeral. She was\u00a0reportedly handcuffed\u00a0outside the Cathedral, but the circumstances are not yet clear.<\/p>\n

Last week,\u00a0Mani\u2019s brother Greg told fans that the musician\u00a0died \u201cpeacefully at his home in Heaton Moor\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in Greater Manchester. He then went on to describe him as a \u201cbeloved husband to the late Imelda [and] the\u00a0much loved\u00a0father to George, Gene and Joe\u201d,\u00a0as well as \u201ca loved son-in-law, nephew, cousin and good friend to many.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a tribute to Mani,\u00a0NME\u00a0described how the late musician \u201cheld a rare place in the world of bass heroes\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cdefined a scene with some of the most infectious and hypnotic basslines ever recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth weighty and melodic, Mani\u2019s bewitching basslines became the bedrock and, often, the driving force of The Roses\u2019 breakthrough tracks \u2018Elephant Stone\u2019, \u2018Made Of Stone\u2019 and \u2018She Bangs The Drums\u2019, and underpinned the band\u2019s low-slung funk development on \u2018Fools Gold\u2019 \u2013 arguably a four-minute encapsulation of the entire late-\u201980s dance rock scene,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n

Tributes poured in after the news of Mani\u2019s death was shared.\u00a0My Bloody Valentine dedicated their first tour in seven years to him<\/a>,\u00a0Oasis played \u2018Live Forever\u2019 in his honour, <\/a>and\u00a0Richard Ashcroft\u00a0played a cover of \u2018She Bangs\u00a0The\u00a0Drums\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More recently, Primal Scream\u00a0frontman\u00a0Bobby Gillespie<\/a>\u00a0recalled when he and Mani met Joey Ramone<\/a>, describing it as \u201clike a scene from a movie\u201d,\u00a0and former\u00a0New Order<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Joy Division<\/a>\u00a0bassist\u00a0Peter Hook \u2013 who worked with Mani in Freebass \u2013 described how \u201cfrom a bass-playing point of view, he was the best\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n
