As always, experts from all disciplines arrived at some groundbreaking conclusions, a small but critical portion of which we\u2019ve highlighted in our annual <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/the-winners-of-the-2025-gizmodo-science-fair-2000652743\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gizmodo Science Fair<\/a>. But the industry also faced an onslaught of challenges to its credibility and economic worth around the world\u2014especially in the U.S., where <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/irreparably-damaged-former-senior-official-details-the-darkest-days-of-the-cdc-under-rfk-jr-2000673201\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">administrative decisions cast doubt<\/a> on the future of key science projects and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>We carry these mixed feelings into 2026, which is slated to be another great\u2014yet perhaps troubled\u2014year for science. No list can fully capture the vast range of the scientific enterprise, but here are some things Gizmodo\u2019s Science Desk is keeping an eye on.<\/p>\n<p>(You\u2019ll notice that we\u2019re missing a ton of spaceflight and astrophysics items on this list, but don\u2019t worry. We\u2019re cooking up an entire list wholly dedicated to that, so stay tuned!)<\/p>\n<p> Giant physics machines go on collective hiatus <\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the biggest items\u2014literally, in a physical sense. In 2026, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Switzerland, will officially go on a 4-year break in July. The hiatus is to <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2505.03535\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">install major upgrades<\/a> to the already gigantic detector, which has been instrumental to a sizable chunk of the best discoveries in particle physics. If things go as planned, the LHC will return as the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/science\/accelerators\/high-luminosity-lhc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">High-Luminosity LHC<\/a> in 2030.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2000701530 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/high-luminosity-lhc.jpg\" alt=\"High Luminosity Lhc\" width=\"1440\" height=\"960\"  \/>A look inside the construction of the High Luminosity LHC. Credit: Samuel Joseph Hertzog (CERN) <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Brookhaven National Laboratory will bid goodbye to the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), leaving it without a major particle accelerator for the first time in 25 years. This shutdown is also to prepare for upgrades, in this case the Electron-Ion Collider. But Brookhaven hasn\u2019t provided detailed updates on its progress,\u00a0although it announced <a href=\"https:\/\/physicsworld.com\/a\/us-electron-ion-collider-hits-construction-milestone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one construction milestone<\/a> in 2024 and successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/lalota.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/lalota-wins-full-funding-brookhaven-collider-adding-25-million-beyond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">secured<\/a> funding for 2026.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2000582106 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/rhic-eic-hr-1280x989.jpg\" alt=\"An artist's renderings of the RHIC (left) and the next-generation EIC (right).\" width=\"1280\" height=\"989\"  \/>An artist\u2019s renderings of the RHIC (left) and the next-generation EIC (right). Lentz\/Brookhaven National Laboratory <\/p>\n<p>Speaking of ambiguity, Fermilab\u2019s muon detector is <a href=\"https:\/\/news.fnal.gov\/2022\/03\/straws-crystals-and-the-quest-for-new-subatomic-physics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supposed<\/a> to be completed by spring 2026, but the Illinois laboratory has yet to share whether that will truly happen.<\/p>\n<p> In quantum computing news\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>2025 was a markedly rewarding year for quantum computing. Major stakeholders\u2014AWS, Google, IBM, and Quantinuum, to name a few\u2014ramped up their hardware efforts. Improvements in the physical machines gave scientists room to explore a wide range of theoretical ideas.<\/p>\n<p>That trend will certainly continue next year\u2014if not intensify\u2014as smaller startups enter the race and larger companies actively look to implement quantum computers in the workplace. Just in the last quarter of 2025, Quantinuum and IBM each unveiled their latest models, <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/behold-helios-the-most-powerful-quantum-computer-on-the-planet-2000682545\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Helios<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ibm.com\/2025-11-12-ibm-delivers-new-quantum-processors,-software,-and-algorithm-breakthroughs-on-path-to-advantage-and-fault-tolerance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nighthawk<\/a>. Once researchers get their hands on these fancy gadgets, who knows what we\u2019ll see?<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2000702045 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IBM-Quantum-Nighthawk-Wafer-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"Ibm Quantum Nighthawk Wafer\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\"  \/>A close-up of the wafer for IBM\u2019s Nighthawk quantum computer. \u00a9 IBM <\/p>\n<p>In fact, you can take a gander at an open-source list IBM has compiled for quantum advantage,\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/quantum-advantage-tracker.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/quantum-advantage-tracker.github.io\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1766263128046000&amp;usg=AOvVaw06cprMVkoKVCqd7VQJy9NR\">Quantum Advantage Tracker<\/a>. \u201cWe encourage the entire computing community to contribute to the tracker and test candidates with the best classical methods,\u201d IBM told Gizmodo.<\/p>\n<p> New vaccines, medications <\/p>\n<p>Longer-term trials for new vaccines and medications are expected to arrive in 2026. For example, data from a <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/study\/NCT06062238\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phase III trial<\/a> of a new tuberculosis vaccine might arrive in early 2026, being almost a year <a href=\"https:\/\/healthpolicy-watch.news\/promising-phase-3-trial-of-tuberculosis-vaccine-is-running-ahead-of-schedule\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ahead<\/a> of schedule as of mid-2025. We should also hear more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pig-kidney-transplant-xenotransplant-addc5a8b6a09d73e021efc9c8eafabc9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first clinical trial<\/a> of pig-to-human organ transplantation, which began late this year, as well as whether the FDA will approve Takeda Pharmaceuticals\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takeda.com\/newsroom\/newsreleases\/2025\/takeda-orexin-data-oveporexton-phase-3-narcolepsy-world-sleep-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oveporexton<\/a>, a first-of-its-kind treatment for narcolepsy.<\/p>\n<p> Parade of weight-loss drugs to continue <\/p>\n<p>This year was also big for various weight-loss drugs, and the trend should continue into 2026. Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company behind <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/eli-lillys-weight-loss-superdrug-worked-so-well-during-trials-some-quit-over-losing-too-much-2000698424\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent trials of a wildly successful alternative to Ozempic and Wegovy<\/a>, will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/16\/healthy-returns-obesity-pills-from-novo-nordisk-eli-lilly-are-coming.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">submit<\/a> a different GLP-1 pill for obesity, orforglipron, for FDA approval sometime next year.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2000611104 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Ozempic-1280x853.jpg\" alt=\"Ozempic\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\"  \/>\u00a9 Starmarpro via Shutterstock <\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk\u2019s high-dose semaglutide pill\u2014the active GLP-1 ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy\u2014will likely be approved by the end of 2025 and available next year as well. The company will also seek FDA approval of their next-gen obesity drug <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/novo-nordisks-experimental-obesity-drug-cagrisema-shows-blood-pressure-benefits-2025-11-06\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CargiSema<\/a> (a mix of cagrilintide and semaglutide) early next year, with possible approval by late 2026.<\/p>\n<p>That said, don\u2019t be surprised if increased competition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/11\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-announces-major-developments-in-bringing-most-favored-nation-pricing-to-american-patients\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">government subsidies<\/a> lead to significant price drops for weight-loss drugs, which would be good news for consumers.<\/p>\n<p> Rollbacks of protective regulations <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, NOAA and the Fish and Wildlife Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2025\/04\/17\/2025-06746\/rescinding-the-definition-of-harm-under-the-endangered-species-act\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposed<\/a> rescinding the regulatory definition of \u201charm\u201d in the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Essentially, the change would limit ESA protections to fish and wildlife themselves\u2014not necessarily their habitats. If the proposal goes through, it could make human construction easier on land occupied by endangered species.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar vein, the Trump administration has been <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/trump-says-he-wants-fema-eliminated-after-hurricane-season-2000614124\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">keen to disparage <\/a>the role of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/fema-staffers-warned-of-looming-katrina-level-disaster-then-got-suspended-2000649312\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rolling back reforms<\/a> put in place following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The current administration has also <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/as-trump-scrubs-climate-reports-nasa-breaks-its-promise-to-save-them-2000629688\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scrubbed climate reports<\/a>, and the final ruling on repealing the EPA\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/trumps-epa-wants-to-pretend-that-greenhouse-gases-arent-a-threat-to-human-health-2000636732\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">endangered finding<\/a>\u201d will come next year. These developments may leave the U.S. underequipped for climate disasters to come in 2026.<\/p>\n<p> New year, new plans <\/p>\n<p>2026 marks the first year of China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2025\/10\/how-china-s-15th-five-year-plan-signals-a-new-phase-of-strategic-adaptation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">next Five-Year Plan<\/a>, the country\u2019s sweeping blueprint for short-term economic growth. Some highlights include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/china-start-commercial-operation-first-small-modular-nuclear-reactor-2026-2025-12-11\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">start<\/a> of commercial operations for small modular nuclear reactors. These mini reactors, as the name suggests, are smaller in capacity but mobile enough to supply remote regions with electricity.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2000702515 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/673a890fc6d0868f1eaa4efb-1.jpg\" alt=\"673a890fc6d0868f1eaa4efb (1)\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\"  \/>Drone photo showing the Meng Xiang. Credit: Xinhua <\/p>\n<p>In addition, Meng Xiang, China\u2019s drilling ship, will conduct its first scientific mission to drill about 4.35 miles (7 kilometers) into Earth\u2019s crust\u2014deep enough to potentially approach the mantle\u2014and collect valuable samples.<\/p>\n<p> Gene editing may go mainstream <\/p>\n<p>November saw the first-in-human clinical trial <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.clevelandclinic.org\/2025\/11\/08\/cleveland-clinic-first-in-human-trial-of-crispr-gene-editing-therapy-shown-to-safely-lower-cholesterol-and-triglycerides\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">results<\/a> for a gene-editing technique to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in people with lipid disorders, or excess fat levels in the blood. KJ Muldoon, the first known person\u2014a baby\u2014to receive customized CRISPR-based therapy, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-03847-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">selected<\/a> as one of Nature\u2019s top 10 people who shaped science in 2025. (We are happy to report that the therapy saved his life).<\/p>\n<p>Given these strides, we may actually soon see CRISPR therapies break into mainstream markets. Several CRISPR therapies are entering clinical trials next year, with major pharmaceutical companies <a href=\"https:\/\/business20channel.tv\/crispr-goes-mainstream-in-2026-the-first-wave-of-edited-huma-14-december-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investing<\/a> up to billions of dollars to get ahead of the competition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Scientists had a rough year in 2025.
