Olivet, Kentucky \u2014 named after the biblical Mount of Olives \u2014 is a hamlet in the smallest county in Kentucky. Population estimates vary, from 155 in 2023 to a bit higher number in the 2020 census. Photojournalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelswensen.com\/#1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Michael Swensen<\/a>, based in tiny Mt. Olivet, gets big-time assignments. His work has been seen worldwide via The Associated Press, Getty Images, The Washington Post, and more.<\/p>\n<p>How did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelswensen.com\/#1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Swensen<\/a>, four-plus years from college graduation, break through? <\/p>\n<p> Talent  <\/p>\n<p>Swensen was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hearstawards.org\/championship\/photojournalism\/2019-20-photojournalism\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">2020 photojournalism champion in the prestigious Hearst Journalism Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/12\/05\/times-top-100-photos-of-2025-tell-powerful-stories-through-incredible-images\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TIME\u2019s Top 100 Photos of 2025<\/a> includes Swensen\u2019s May 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/redesign\/_next\/image\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.time.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2025%2F11%2Ftime-top-100-photos-2025-032.jpg&amp;w=3840&amp;q=75\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">photo<\/a> of tornado damage in Kentucky. <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2023\/11\/21\/time-shares-its-top-100-photos-of-2023-covering-major-global-events\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TIME\u2019s Top 100 Photos of 2023<\/a> featured <a href=\"https:\/\/api.time.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/time-top-100-photos-2023-042.jpg?quality=85&amp;w=1800\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">his image<\/a> of Donald Trump visiting East Palestine, Ohio, after the Norfolk Southern train derailment.<\/p>\n<p> DNA  <\/p>\n<p>Swensen grew up in metro Pittsburgh. His father, Jeff Swensen, based in Pittsburgh, is an independent photographer for leading news outlets. Both studied at Ohio University\u2019s School of Visual Communication. Last December, <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2024\/12\/05\/how-a-photographer-captured-a-record-breaking-lake-effect-snowstorm\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PetaPixel featured Jeff Swensen\u2019s photos<\/a> depicting staggering winter storms. <\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_0228_1-699x800.jpg\" alt=\"Four people with cameras and press badges stand and smile for a photo in front of a press area with equipment, ladders, and other media personnel in the background. Getty Images contacted Swensen after a United Parcel Service (UPS) cargo plane crashed in Louisville. He was up at 5 AM on November 5, drove 85 miles to Louisville, and returned home after 10 PM. <\/p>\n<p>On November 8, Swensen was in Lexington to cover the Kentucky vs. Florida football game for The AP (Kentucky won 38-7).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what I signed up for,\u201d says Swensen, referring to back-to-back assignments involving road trips.<\/p>\n<p> Location  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_0221_1-800x534.jpg\" alt=\"Two people and a dog are foraging for mushrooms in a dense, green forest. The dog stands nearby among the trees and foliage.\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" class=\"size-large wp-image-832201\"  \/>Nick Farmer and his son, Aldo, harvest oyster mushrooms from a log that they inoculated (Photo by Michael Swensen) <\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Swensen spent three months photographing Harrison County, Kentucky, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boydsstation.org\/about-apply-vis-grants\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">grant recipient<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boydsstation.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Boyd\u2019s Station<\/a>, a nonprofit arts and journalism residency program\/community gallery in Cynthiana, Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>After college graduation in southeastern Ohio, Swensen returned to Kentucky and made it his home; Mt. Olivet is about 22 miles from Cynthiana.<\/p>\n<p>He likes the rural appeal of Mt. Olivet, which is out of the way but not out of reach. Highways criss-cross this region, dotted with distribution centers attracted by access to ground and air transport, including UPS in Louisville.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew that living out in a rural area would have its challenges,\u201d says Swensen, \u201cbut I was willing to take a risk to be in rural Kentucky, a place I love dearly. I also knew that Kentucky might be a good place to establish myself as a freelancer because it\u2019s centrally located. I can be in a handful of midwestern cities within five hours.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mt. Olivet is 60 miles south of Cincinnati; Swensen photographed some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcpo.com\/sports\/baseball\/reds\/surging-reds-blank-cubs-move-into-tie-for-nl-wild-card-spot\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Cincinnati Reds home games<\/a> for The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post assigned Swensen to photograph its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/12\/10\/billionaire-politics-protests-sanders\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">in-depth story<\/a> about political reaction to billionaires. The Post\u2019s dateline: BROOKVILLE, Indiana, a two-hour drive from Swensen\u2019s residence in Mt. The Post\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/interactive\/2025\/stable-recovery-racehorses-addiction\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">article<\/a>, published on May 3, began with byline credit for sports reporter Chuck Culpepper and for Swensen.<\/p>\n<p>      Advice to Others  <\/p>\n<p>Swensen isn\u2019t preachy or pushy, but shares advice via social media on how to grow as a photojournalist: look at lots of photography, stay current with the news, and always have camera equipment at the ready.<\/p>\n<p>   \u2018I knew that living out in a rural area would have its challenges but I was willing to take a risk to be in rural Kentucky, a place I love dearly.\u2019   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurround yourself with a creative and supportive community,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG_0222_1-800x535.jpg\" alt=\"Two people play in a sunlit, tree-lined river; one person is holding the other\u2019s legs as they float on their back. A rainbow light streak shines across the scene, creating a warm, playful atmosphere.\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" class=\"size-large wp-image-832200\"  \/>Ashley Farmer throws her son, Aldo, into the Licking River in Harrison County, Kentucky (Photo by Michael Swensen) <\/p>\n<p>Swensen\u2019s creative peers include artists, photographers, and supporters of Boyd\u2019s Station, \u201ca deeply supportive community that helps with access, collaboration, and lasting professional connections,\u201d says USA Today Senior Photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jackgruber.com\/index\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Jack Gruber<\/a>, who co-founded Boyd\u2019s Station and serves as its executive director. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael Swensen,\u201d says Gruber, \u201chas become a go-to photographer for national news organizations and wire services seeking a trusted photojournalist, one who understands the region, earns the confidence of its people, and consistently delivers exceptional work.\u201d<br \/>\u201cWhether working in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky or beyond, distance is never a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> What\u2019s Next? <\/p>\n<p>Swensen is working on a long-range project to photograph older men in rural Kentucky who meet regularly for coffee. This type of socialization, he says, helps to counter isolation and depression that afflict some men after retirement.<\/p>\n<p>On December 18, The Associated Press wire service moved an <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/social-isolation-religion-building-connections-fd824e3daa93594e5f0d448afac45aa2\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">in-depth article<\/a> on small groups working to counter historic levels of social isolation.
