His most famous moment, arguably, came when he stepped into someone else&#8217;s spotlight. Kosco replaced Mickey Mantle at first base in the future Hall of Famer&#8217;s final game in 1968.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6c\">\u201cYou cannot imagine the thrill it is to put on a Yankee uniform and play in Yankee Stadium, and you have to be around (Mickey) Mantle every day to appreciate what he is \u2014 the most courageous man I have ever seen,&#8221; he told the Tuscaloosa News <a href=\"https:\/\/sabr.org\/bioproj\/person\/andy-kosco\/#_edn4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in March 1969<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6f\">More news: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/dodgers\/onsi\/news\/andrew-friedman-hints-at-dodgers-adding-position-player-after-69-million-all-star-addition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Friedman Hints at Dodgers Adding Position Player After $69 Million All-Star Addition<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6i\">By then, Kosco was an outfielder in the Dodgers&#8217; spring training camp, having arrived in an offseason trade for pitcher Mike Kekich.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6l\">Kosco, who died Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/sports\/mlb\/former-yankees-red-sox-dodgers-outfielder-dies-11263251\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at age 84<\/a>, only spent two seasons with the Dodgers, in 1969 and 1970. While the 1969 season was hardly the best in Dodgers history, it was arguably the best of Kosco&#8217;s 10-year career in Major League Baseball.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6o\">That year, as the Dodgers&#8217; primary right fielder, Kosco hit .248 with 19 home runs and 74 RBIs \u2014 all career-highs. His 19 home runs led the Dodgers in a pitcher-friendly league.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">In 1970, Kosco played only 74 games for the Dodgers and slashed .228\/.230\/.388 with eight home runs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">More news: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/dodgers\/onsi\/news\/former-dodgers-first-baseman-dies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Former Dodgers First Baseman Dies<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">In February 1971, Kosco was traded by the Dodgers to the Milwaukee Brewers for Al Downing \u2014 the first of four trades in a two-year span. He appeared in 164 games from 1971-72 with the Brewers, Angels and Red Sox before playing his final two seasons with the Reds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\">Mostly a reserve outfielder, Kosco retired with 73 home runs, 267 RBIs and a .236 batting average in 10 seasons with the Minnesota Twins (1965-67), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/sports-mlb-yankees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees (1968),<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/sports-mlb-dodgers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Dodgers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/sports-mlb-brewers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee Brewers (1971), California Angels (1972), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/sports-mlb-sox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Red Sox (1972), Reds (1973-74).<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"73\">A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Kosco returned to his hometown after his baseball career ended.
