{"id":367106,"date":"2025-12-24T07:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T07:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/367106\/"},"modified":"2025-12-24T07:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T07:28:08","slug":"rarely-seen-seven-arm-octopus-spotted-off-california-coast-for-4th-time-in-4-decades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/367106\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Rarely Seen&#8217; Seven-Arm Octopus Spotted Off California Coast for 4th Time in 4 Decades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEED TO KNOW<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A seven-arm octopus was spotted in Monterey Bay in Nov. 6<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The deep-sea octopus is &#8220;rarely seen,&#8221; per the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, which has only seen it four times in four decades<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers collected detailed observations about the octopus during the rare encounter<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A seldom-spotted deep-sea octopus was seen off of the coast of California in November, marking just the fourth sighting in as many decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The evasive creature, called the seven-arm octopus, was spotted in Monterey Bay during a research expedition on Nov. 6, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4_ltojepN-g&amp;t=1s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:footage;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">footage<\/a> of the rare sighting, the institute said that MBARI scientists and researchers spotted the animal \u2014 which is also known as septopus, blob octopus or its scientific name, Haliphron atlanticus \u2014 on Nov. 6 at approximately 2,300 feet below sea level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The sighting \u201cmarked just our fourth observation of this species in nearly four decades of ocean exploration,\u201d the MBARI noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The team that spotted the deep-sea octopus, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbari.org\/animal\/seven-arm-octopus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:MBARI;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">MBARI<\/a> describes as a \u201crarely seen giant,\u201d was able to collect detailed observations about its behavior \u2014 including the fact that the creature had a jellyfish in its grasp during the sighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The so-called septopus was \u201cclutching\u201d a crimson red helmet jelly, the institute said, noting that the creature feeds on gelatinous animals \u2014 a tidbit revealed through previous research by Henk-Jan Hoving, an MBARI collaborator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Steven Haddock, a senior scientist with the MBARI who was on the Nov. 6 expedition, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-12-12\/rare-deep-sea-encounter-california-scientists-observe-extraordinary-seven-arm-octopus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Los Angeles Times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Los Angeles Times<\/a> that \u201cto be able to confirm our first observation with this new sighting was informative because this octopus was holding a different, deeper-living type of jellyfish than we\u2019d seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During a previous seven-arm octopus encounter in 2017, the septopus was also \u201cclutching\u201d a jellyfish, this time an egg-yolk jelly, per the institute. Further analysis of museum specimens\u2019 stomach contents confirmed that seven-arm octopus feeds on jellyfish and other gelatinous animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Speaking with The L.A. There is a simple explanation for this misconception, however, per the MBARI\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAs is typical of octopuses, male Haliphron atlanticus have a specialized hectocotylus arm for transferring sperm during mating.
