Debating Trent Alexander-Arnold<\/a>\u2018s transfer to Real Madrid<\/a>, Steven Gerrard<\/a> explained why he believes Liverpool fans struggle to understand the move.<\/p>\n

Alexander-Arnold\u2019s summer switch from Liverpool to Madrid has been debated to the Bernabeu and back, so we won\u2019t bore you with the argument again.<\/p>\n

However, it is worth taking note of what Gerrard says on the topic, given he turned down moves to then better teams while captaining his boyhood club.<\/p>\n

Comparing his Chelsea<\/a> rejection in 2004, Steve McManaman\u2019s free transfer from Anfield to Madrid in 1999 and Trent\u2019s 2025 move, Gerrard told TNT Sports<\/a>: \u201cI totally understand that everyone\u2019s got the right and it\u2019s their careers.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d really never want to interfere in anyone\u2019s decision from a footballer\u2019s perspective. Of course you do as a manager because you want to protect yourself, your team and the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was probably somewhere in the middle for that. In terms of Steve McManaman, [he] made the right decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Liverpool team he was playing in wasn\u2019t competitive, I wouldn\u2019t say, and I think it was a huge jump from that Liverpool team to Real Madrid<\/a>, so from a football perspective that was a no-brainer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think nine out of 10 people would probably jump into that and I think, in time, Liverpool fans really understood that one.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Trent\u2019s very different because he was playing in arguably one of the best Liverpool teams ever; one of the favourites to compete for the Champions League<\/a>, they\u2019re winning leagues.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrent had in the palm of his hands what I craved for all of my career, and still looking back now and I wish I achieved what he had in the palm of his hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alexander-Arnold was widely booed when he returned to Anfield with Madrid, coming off the bench in Los Blancos\u2019 1-0 loss to Liverpool in November.<\/p>\n

The mural of him in L4 was also defaced with graffiti calling him a \u2018rat\u2019, treatment McManaman didn\u2019t receive when he left.<\/p>\n

Gerrard, however, was subject to outrage when rumours circulated that he would be joining Jose Mourinho.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Trent\u2019s decision was probably a lot more difficult than Macca\u2019s,\u201d Gerrard added.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cMine was probably somewhere in the middle where we was competing for domestic cups and we were in the conversation, but Man United<\/a>, Arsenal<\/a> and Chelsea<\/a> came and were much stronger than the team I was playing in so it was tempting.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinancially, they\u2019re offering you double your money. \u201d<\/p>\n

Thankfully, Gerrard stayed and went on to win the Champions League<\/a> the following season, becoming a Liverpool legend and one of the world\u2019s most-revered midfielders.<\/p>\n
