Some words may be mispronounced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">IOWA CITY \u2014 One morning in 1999 \u2014 inside her home in Washington, Iowa \u2014 an 8-year-old Maria Davis woke up stuck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cHer shoulders wouldn\u2019t relax,\u201d her mom Jane Noble Davis recalled. \u201cAnd when it happened a second time, I told our physician that my gut feeling was something\u2019s not right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Following an X-ray, their local physician wondered whether Maria might have something called, \u201cChiari malformation\u201d \u2014 a defect in the cerebellum that extends brain tissue into the spinal canal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cBut they said it&#8217;s rare,\u201d Davis said. \u201cAnd they doubted that she had it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">To make sure, they sent the family to the University of Iowa Health Care neurosurgery department and globally-renowned UIHC neurosurgeon Arnold Menezes \u2014 who confirmed Maria had the defect along with Klippel Feil syndrome, when two or more neck vertebrae are abnormally joined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">She would need a complex and invasive surgery to correct the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cWe were fortunate to know a lot of people who worked at the university who were able to tell us that \u2014 he&#8217;s it,\u201d Davis said. \u201cHe&#8217;s world famous for what he does. He created this procedure, and that&#8217;s exactly what Maria needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cWe were fortunate that he was the one and only for Maria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Menezes at that time was about halfway through what would become a 50-year globally-esteemed, world-changing, and lives-saving career at the University of Iowa \u2014 over which he would innovate novel neurosurgical procedures, author foundational textbooks on craniovertebral abnormalities, deliver more than 800 scientific presentations, establish spinal neurosurgery programs in Africa, Asia, Europe and South American, and treat more than 7,000 patients like Maria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cThey formed a special bond,\u201d Davis said about the doctor and her daughter, who grew up to be certified physician assistant in the vascular surgery clinic at the UI Heart and Vascular Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cShe often saw Dr. Menezes in the hallway and they would give each other a big hug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">So when the family learned he was sick, they paid him a visit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cI went with my girls to see him a week before he died,\u201d Davis said \u2014 and they tried to share with him \u2014 although lacking words \u2014 at least one of their leading emotions. \u201cGratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Dr. Menezes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/obituaries\/dr-arnold-h-menezes\/\" id=\"link-9f33673e1b8a7b88df901fe78cfdbfe0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">died Oct. 30 at age 81<\/a>. (UIHC photo)<\/p>\n<p>                 \u00a0 Buy Photo<\/p>\n<p>            \u2018One person in the world\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Born in Mumbai, India, Menezes came from a long line of physicians and surgeons \u2014 including his father, grandfather and great-grandfather. As a medical student at Bombay University, he learned that treatments for brain tumors in children were largely unsuccessful and set out to change that \u2014 eyeing the United States as offering research opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">But medical residencies were sparse for India-born doctors, according to a UIHC 2024 profile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cDiscrimination,\u201d Menezes said at the time. \u201cBack in medical school, I stood first in anatomy, first in general surgery, first in internal medicine. But it didn\u2019t matter. Many places were not interested in someone like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Menezes got his foot in the door through a community hospital in South Chicago, where he learned \u201cwhat not to do\u201d and the importance of finding an academic medical center where both he and his wife \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/obituaries\/dr-meenal-menezes\/\" id=\"link-1513a7369e94db945a10043a79fd5efc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the late Dr. Meenal Menezes<\/a> \u2014 could complete their residencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Some institutions made offers to one or the other but not both \u2014 at times criticizing their nationality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cThe general response I got from some of these was, \u2018We have better people than you to choose from\u2019,\u201d Menezes told the university last year of the rejection letters he shared with Matthew Howard, UIHC professor and chair of the UI Department of Neurosurgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cJust terrible stuff,\u201d Howard said. \u201cLetters saying they\u2019d never take a doctor from India because they\u2019re not competent and they\u2019re not trustworthy. (UIHC photo)<\/p>\n<p>                 \u00a0 Buy Photo<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">But UIHC took a chance on them \u2014 welcoming Arnold for residency and fellowship training in general surgery, neurosurgery, and pediatric neurosurgery and Meenal for training in anesthesia and cardiac anesthesia. She served as an adjunct clinical professor at UIHC before shifting to Mercy Iowa City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Menezes joined the UIHC medical faculty in 1974 \u2014 when patients with disorders involving the junction between the skull and spine had high morbidity and mortality rates. Specifically, about one-third of these patients would die within three days of having what was the standard surgery at the time \u2014 which involved accessing the problem area through the back of the patient\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">In considering alternatives, Menezes looked to a relatively rare method for treating tuberculosis that went through a patient\u2019s mouth. But he knew he would need training beyond neurosurgery \u2014 like in orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and biomechanics \u2014 to chart a new method.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">So he reached out to those other departments, and \u201cthey all welcomed me,\u201d Menezes told the university \u2014 recalling the mentors and colleagues who inspired him through their own innovative careers, like Ignacio Ponseti, who developed the globally-esteemed Ponseti method for clubfoot treatment; and Brian McCabe, former chair of the UI Department of Otolaryngology, who \u2014 among other things \u2014 oversaw development of multidisciplinary cleft lip-palate management and of cochlear implantation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">With their guidance, Menezes designed, performed and interpreted radiology procedures \u2014 which he used in making clinical correlations aimed at breaking the pattern of high mortality rates.<\/p>\n<p>                <a href=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.cdr.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b5da3246-0272-5134-af37-b448a1adad5f&amp;type=preview&amp;q=60&amp;function=fit&amp;maxsize=1200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentUrl\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid gaz-img\" data-uuid=\"b5da3246-0272-5134-af37-b448a1adad5f\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766676614_190_\" alt=\"Neurosurgeon Arnold Menezes (top row, second from left) is pictured in the 1970s with faculty and residents in the UI Department of Surgery\u2019s Division of Neurosurgery. (UIHC photo)<\/p>\n<p>                 \u00a0 Buy Photo<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cHe was the one person in the world who really figured out the fine details of a different set of surgical strategies to get to that area, remove the parts of the bone that were pressing on the nervous system, and then stabilize the patient after that intervention,\u201d Howard told The Gazette. \u201cSo he would essentially cure these patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Menezes around 1978 started building a patient database \u2014 at first by hand \u2014 which has since grown to encompass more than 7,000 patient cases from around the world. In 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/education\/university-of-iowa-doctors-reshape-childs-face-and-future\/\" id=\"link-6c4dfcf27424cf3a6ba7f1b384062dfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Menezes cared for a 3-year-old Congolese boy<\/a> named Moise Irakiza who was born with a hole in the front of his skull \u2014 allowing his brain to grow through it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">The defect created a facial deformity in the child \u2014 whose growing brain was pushing aside his eyes. Despite the extreme risk of the 12-hour procedure their daughter had to endure at age 8, neither she nor her husband Craig Davis doubted the surgeon\u2019s steady hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cWe knew that he was the expert,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cHe just said, \u2018This is really serious. But I can fix it\u2019,\u201d Craig said. \u201cHe said, \u2018But don\u2019t research anything on the internet. Because I\u2019m the expert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">When it was over, Menezes got back into this suit and tie to meet with the anxious parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cAnd he said, \u2018It went exactly as I planned\u2019,\u201d Craig said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Given the complexity of the invasive procedure, Maria required a ventilator and a week in the pediatric intensive care unit \u2014 spending a total of three weeks in the hospital. Because Menezes accessed her brain through her soft palate, Maria had to be on a soft diet for a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cBut she had no residual effects \u2014 speech or cognitive,\u201d Craig said \u2014 noting she did lose permission to participate in one of her favorite activities. \u201cHe said, \u2018No more tumbling ever.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Like other families, the Davises highlighted Menezes\u2019 charming bedside manner \u2014 talking directly to the kids about their health care and listening to their questions, which Maria had a lot of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cThe day before her surgery, when we went in for her pre-op \u2026 Maria came in with her page of 13 questions,\u201d Jane Noble Davis said, and Menezes answered them all \u2014 like \u201cWhat am I going to do all day?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cHe said, \u2018You\u2019re going to sleep\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cShe said, \u2018How are you going to stay awake all day?\u2019\u201d her mom said. \u201cAnd he said, \u2018I drink Jolt\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                <a href=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.cdr.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b830a563-62f7-5c6d-a005-b64865e3d104&amp;type=preview&amp;q=60&amp;function=fit&amp;maxsize=1200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentUrl\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid gaz-img\" data-uuid=\"b830a563-62f7-5c6d-a005-b64865e3d104\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766676615_968_\" alt=\"Neurosurgeon Arnold Menezes shares a playful moment with Maria Davis, age 8, during a follow-up visit in 1999. (UIHC photo)<\/p>\n<p>                 \u00a0 Buy Photo<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">When asked years later to articulate the impact Menezes had on her family, Jane said she struggled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">\u201cIf you&#8217;re the recipient of his gifts, there are no words,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat you&#8217;ve done for Maria&#8217;s quality of life and the entire medical community by dedicating your life to a solution cannot be written in words. I wish you could read my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__body\">Even after Menezes\u2019 passing, he and his wife continued giving \u2014 donating $4.2 million to the UI health system to be split between two funds:<\/p>\n<p>                The Dr. Arnold H. Menezes and Dr. Meenal A. Menezes Patient and Family Assistance Fund will provide financial assistance to low-income patients and families who experience extenuating non-medical costs related to their care journey. This includes essential needs such as transportation costs, groceries, lodging, meals and other daily living expenses outside the scope of traditional health care services.The Dr. Meenal A. Menezes and Dr. Arnold H.
