Dozens of species of \u201cweird and wonderful\u201d ducks are also coming to the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"23JBW3VUZ5HK5G6DRIBBJUYFB4\">Michigan\u2019s waterways will be filled with a fascinating cast of characters. As colder temperatures and icy winds freeze Arctic or boreal waters, ducks make their way south to the relative warmth of the Great Lakes state, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/dnr\/things-to-do\/wildlife-viewing\/birding\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/dnr\/things-to-do\/wildlife-viewing\/birding\/winter\">Michigan Department of Natural Resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RAJA6IMTEJGZVIVYKVKIZI5VXE\">Michigan is a winter haven for more than 30 duck species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GMTAE2GER5CO5BUGG5HDZ3EWIM\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/11\/snowy-owls-migrate-in-booms-and-busts-this-winter-could-be-a-boom.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/11\/snowy-owls-migrate-in-booms-and-busts-this-winter-could-be-a-boom.html\">Snowy owls migrate in booms and busts. This winter could be a boom<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7LOCUSQ4TZG73NPSDQOY7YAMAU\">These species feature unique beauty, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/field-guide\/bird\/northern-pintail?utm_campaign=mi+birds+winter+ducks+winged+weds&amp;utm_medium=mkt+email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">northern pintail<\/a> with its three-piece-suit plumage; delightful adaptations and behaviors, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/field-guide\/bird\/surf-scoter?utm_campaign=mi+birds+winter+ducks+winged+weds&amp;utm_medium=mkt+email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">surf scoters<\/a> that dive into cresting waves; and awe-inspiring gatherings, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2022\/12\/25k-and-counting-huge-group-of-redhead-ducks-on-straits-of-mackinac-keeps-growing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">thousands of redhead ducks<\/a> that float on open water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VZ7DEYV6XNEORDSADS3XJN4M2E\">Here are five of the \u201cweird ducks\u201d and other waterfowl we might spot this time of year, and how to successfully ID them:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Flock of redhead ducks\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/JVY5LVBWK5BJLCKKJ65NOFAJ2Q.jpg\"  \/>A flock of redhead ducks by Ryan Dziedzic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5CWLTS76XZAWTOLUJ5BJ4JVURM\">Redheads: Look for the telltale cinnamon-hued heads on the males of this species; the females will be close by, with medium-brown coloring on their bodies. Rusnak<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5JLYRKWD5RBPTJGYANIG4OCAIQ\">Gadwalls: From afar these birds might not look like much, but if you\u2019re able to see them through binoculars or a spotting scope, you can appreciate the males\u2019 subtle yet intricate shades and patterns. From a distance the males appear black and white, but if you look closely you\u2019ll see a patch of mesmerizing iridescent green and purple. Look for Snow Geese in open fields or shallow waters, paying close attention since these birds come in two different color \u201cmorphs,\u201d or patterns: The white morph has a white head and body with black wing tips, while the blue morph has a dark body and white head.
