It was to help George, Clarence tells him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjmz9ipv0000356pmkeh6vua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOnly one way you can help me,\u201d George says sarcastically. \u201cYou don\u2019t happen to have 8,000 bucks on you?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn00i9j0007356pjrje4941@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The film then cuts to an elated George running through town, gleefully shouting \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d to the \u201cYou are Now in Bedford Falls\u201d sign, Mr. Potter, the bank examiner and eventually his family.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn00yym000b356px5m4709j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wait, what?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn08oa1000e356pitkkprwu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s the surprise you got if you selected the \u201cabridged\u201d version of the Christmas classic \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d on Amazon Prime Video. By the thousands of confused and outraged comments posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GermainLussier\/status\/1871420703230321031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">social media<\/a> on Christmas Day \u2014 you weren\u2019t alone if you did.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn098nx000h356p1vyuf4zu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amazon streams the full version of the movie for Prime members, but the abridged version is available free for anyone, with ads. The abridged version cuts about a half hour out of the 1946 Frank Capra film\u2019s runtime, axing the entire \u201cPottersville\u201d scene, where Clarence the angel (second class) guides George through an alternate reality in which he never existed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn0lv7m000p356pqwk52ypf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of course, the movie makes no sense without that pivotal part of the story. So why cut it?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn0g1mr000k356p3a3dmz16@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Copyright law. Well, an interpretation of it, anyway.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn0k3ch000n356pbcwrvj4y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d is loosely based on the 1943 short story \u201cThe Greatest Gift,\u201d written by Philip Van Doren Stern.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn3haak0001356pk5ei67ov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In \u201cThe Greatest Gift,\u201d the main character, George, confides in a stranger on a bridge that he wishes he had never been born. The stranger tells him to go back to town, where George finds his life in disarray. No one knows him, and George\u2019s brother, whom he had saved as a boy, had drowned. George returns to the stranger, who explains that life is a blessing and the world is better with George in it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn0obca000u356p1ftl6koa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Greatest Gift\u201d plot is closely mirrored in the Pottersville scene, but the film greatly expands upon it with a long backstory and a short conclusion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn158ua000x356pyb3kmv85@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stern obtained the original copyright for the short story and he renewed it in 1971. Upon his death, the copyright license was left to Stern\u2019s daughter and her three daughters, who formed The Greatest Gift Corporation to manage the rights to his works, <a href=\"https:\/\/itsawonderfullifeplay.com\/copyright\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Jason LeBlanc,<\/a> the playwright who partners with Stern\u2019s estate to license \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d for the stage.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        The film enters public domain<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn31vwb0000356pn11vb4hg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 1974, the copyright for \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d expired, when then-owner Republic Pictures failed to renew it, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.loc.gov\/copyright\/2017\/12\/its-a-wonderful-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">article<\/a> published on the Library of Congress\u2019 website.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn4g4ke000e356p0mdoa1xi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not clear why Republic Pictures allowed the copyright to expire. The Library of Congress cites a \u201cclerical error,\u201d which may have been caused by the film\u2019s late-December 1946 release to qualify for the 1947 Academy Awards, even though its run in cinemas was mostly in 1947. It\u2019s conceivable that Republic Pictures mistook the release date \u2014 and therefore when the 28-year copyright expired.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/gettyimages-526901382-2.jpg\" alt=\"A scene from Frank Capra's \" it=\"\" a=\"\" wonderful=\"\" life=\"\" with=\"\" jimmy=\"\" stewart=\"\" and=\"\" the=\"\" angel=\"\" played=\"\" by=\"\" henry=\"\" travers.=\"\" class=\"image_medium__dam-img image_medium__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_medium__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"1451\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn3ttma0004356pf1nre861@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Regardless of the reason, the expiration of the copyright became a happy accident for the film\u2019s success: The movie had flopped in theaters and was mostly forgotten for decades. But when it entered the public domain, television networks jumped at the chance to broadcast the film to fill the airwaves on Christmas, and it became a beloved classic three decades after its initial run.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn4om3c0000356pqvhlpzcc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That continued until 1993, when Republic Pictures sent broadcasters letters claiming that it had the copyright to \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life,\u201d after all, and they could no longer broadcast the film for free, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1996-03-26-fi-51366-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Los Angeles Times <\/a>reported at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn5agwl0009356p5tx1pucu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Republic Pictures had just been acquired by Viacom, now part of Paramount. The new company\u2019s executives were surprised to learn that it had been giving away \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d for free, especially after the 1990 Supreme Court decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/fair-use\/summaries\/stewart-abend-1990.pdf?loclr=blogcop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stewart v. Abend<\/a>, which found actor Jimmy Stewart and director Alfred Hitchcock had to pay licensing fees to release a new version of \u201cRear Window\u201d because the short story on which it was based remained copyrighted, even though the film\u2019s copyright had since entered the public domain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn595ga0005356pkggdzw5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Republic argued that it maintained the exclusive rights to film adaptations to \u201cThe Greatest Gift.\u201d The company also acquired the rights to the film\u2019s score. It used both of those arguments in the letter it sent to the broadcasters, which acquiesced. Republic then entered into an exclusive agreement with NBC to broadcast \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d from then on.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn4qwzq0002356pilssncxm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stern\u2019s granddaughter Sarah Robinson, who runs The Greatest Gift Corporation, maintained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/1119-george-bailey-was-never-b-127106279\/episode\/part-04-the-corporations-movie-1993-129594841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2023 iHeartRadio interview<\/a> that Republic never actually obtained the underlying story rights, and her grandfather\u2019s estate had the right to sue the broadcasters who aired and streamed the movie \u2014 but her company has chosen not to. Regardless, the public domain status of \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d was in doubt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn5ohpo000e356pms8mdt2b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With the movie\u2019s licensing complexities, some creative types opted to test the limits of copyright law, according to film historian <a href=\"https:\/\/textualvariations.substack.com\/p\/iawl-gray-versions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mikhail Skoptsov<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn5zx95000k356pfgvkdw49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, in 2020, parody site RiffTrax released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rifftrax.com\/its-a-wonderful-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cut-down version of \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life,\u201d<\/a> dubbed over with a comedic commentary and streamed on free streaming platform Tubi. The missing portion: the Pottersville scene.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn6bdky000q356ppyf9nmkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rifftrax.com\/its-a-wonderful-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">blog post<\/a> about their parody version, RiffTrax said it cut the Pottersville scene because it believed the rest of the film to be in the public domain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn6g7tm000t356pny7cxwuj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe main copyrighted stuff comes down to 1) material from the short story \u2018The Greatest Gift\u2019 that part of the film was based on, and 2) some musical rights for background songs,\u201d the site said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn66zn6000n356pwamjz8eh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            RiffTrax distributor Legend Films in 2021 released the same cut of the film, without the commentary. It was originally streamed on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/mildlyinfuriating\/comments\/qthgme\/apparently_the_legend_edition_of_its_a_wonderful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tubi<\/a> as the \u201cLegend edition,\u201d and it remains available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopladigital.com\/movie\/its-a-wonderful-life-abridged-james-stewart\/15280997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hoopla<\/a>, a free site for library card holders. Legend did not respond to a request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn6hjo8000w356pmfznbaty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That version then began streaming on Amazon Prime in 2024 as the \u201cabridged version,\u201d but the shortened film\u2019s credits continue to cite Legend Films as the distributor. It\u2019s not clear why Amazon streams it. (Amazon also didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn6krtv000z356pr2ocevti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But here\u2019s a possibility: Legend\u2019s expertise is in colorizing old films. In addition to Legend\u2019s abridged version of \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life,\u201d Amazon also streams Legend\u2019s colorized version of the film for Prime customers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjn6mz3h0012356p6heqif5s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The story of the abridged version of \u201cIt\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u201d is as complex as the copyright saga itself.
