Lynyrd Skynyrd<\/a> has \u201cabout 30 songs\u201d written with late guitarist Gary Rossington<\/a> that\u00a0the band still\u00a0hopes to record and release.<\/p>\n

In a recent conversation with French outlet Riff X<\/a>, singer Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Rickey Medlocke offered details on the unheard material.<\/p>\n

“We have songs that we wrote with Gary that we never recorded,\u201d Van Zandt confirmed.<\/p>\n

“We discovered [these songs] shortly after Gary’s passing,” Medlocke explained. \u201cThey brought us a load of tapes and all this stuff \u2014 [Gary’s] wife did \u2014 and we discovered we had about 30 songs that Gary had taken part with Johnny and myself and whomever. And you could hear him talking on the tapes and talking about lyrics and all that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Revisiting the abandoned song ideas lit a spark within the surviving Skynyrd bandmates. \u201cJohnny and I started talking about doing \u2014 possibly doing \u2014 another Lynyrd Skynyrd record that included Gary’s songs on it and stuff,” Medlocke noted.<\/p>\n

“We’ll see what the future brings,\u201d Van Zandt remarked, stopping short of grunting the music\u2019s release, \u201cbut we would like to bring that to the forefront and get it to our fans.”<\/p>\n

How Lynyrd Skynyrd Has Continued Since Gary Rossington’s Death<\/p>\n

Rossington, Lynyrd Skynyrd\u2019s last remaining original member, died in 2023<\/a> at the age of 71. The group has continued touring since then, something the guitarist passionately supported before his death.<\/p>\n

Lynyrd Skynyrd has previously hinted at a new album<\/a>, which would be their first LP since 2012\u2019s Last of a Dyin\u2019 Breed. While fans eagerly hope for new music,\u00a0the southern rock legends recently announced 2026 tour plans, including headlining shows<\/a> and an extended trek<\/a> with Foreigner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carrying on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Legacy Is a ‘Big Responsibility’<\/p>\n

Some onlookers have questioned whether Lynyrd Skynyrd should continue without any original members. Van Zandt insists its a task the musicians take great pride in.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us to carry on the legacy is, it\u2019s a big responsibility,\u201d the singer explained, before noting his own circumstance, having taking over vocal duties from his late brother, Ronnie.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me personally, it\u2019s been a big weight on my shoulders for a long time,” the singer admitted. “I want to be able to, at the end of my life say, \u2018Hey, I did it the best that I could.\u2019 I\u2019m not Ronnie, I\u2019m never gonna be Ronnie. I didn\u2019t want to be Ronnie. I\u2019m not Ronnie, I\u2019m Johnny. And to be able to have this honor to carry it on is amazing.”<\/p>\n

While Lynyrd Skynyrd has no plans to retire soon, Van Zandt can still envision what life will be like after that final bow.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope to be on my porch someday, smoking a cigar, drinking a nice whiskey, and saying, \u2018Wow, what a ride!\u201d<\/p>\n
