Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a> was not interested in filming a sex scene with Ethan Hawke for their movie, Great Expectations \u2014 even though the director recommended it. <\/p>\n

The two actors<\/a> reflected on when they first met during a recent video for Vanity Fair. They recalled that when they were working on the 1998 movie adaptation of Charles Dickens\u2019 novel, Great Expectations, director Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n suggested filming a sex scene. <\/p>\n

\u201cDo you remember Alfonso pitching you the love scene?\u201d Hawke said, before Paltrow responded<\/a>: \u201cOh my god. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Oh my god, my father\u2019s going to see this,\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

Hawke recited how Cuar\u00f3n described the scene, continuing: \u201cThe camera is going to go down your belly, and then it’s going to go up your breasts, and then it’s going to go in your face as you reach ecstasy. And then when you reach ecstasy, the light will explode like to the sun!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I remember looking at Gwyneth, and Gwyneth is like, \u2018Alfonso, I’m never going to do that,\u2019\u201d he concluded. <\/p>\n

The Marty Supreme star explained why she wasn\u2019t comfortable filming sex scenes at the time. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn my early career, I was really self-conscious about my dad and grandfather seeing this kind of stuff,\u201d she said. \u201cLike it really bothered me. Now, I wouldn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Hawke said that he thought Paltrow was \u201camazing in the way\u201d she handled that situation, noting she was not \u201cpetulant\u201d but direct. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think in regard to that scene, you had an awareness of the way that the business works, and the ways in which those kinds of images could be manipulated and what it meant to your dad,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe I was too prudish in the moment,\u201d she confessed, before the Dead Poets Society star responded: \u201cI don’t think you were.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Great Expectations, set in New York City, Hawke plays Finnegan \u201cFinn\u201d Bell, an orphan who falls deeply in love with heartbreaker Estella, portrayed by Paltrow. <\/p>\n

This year, Paltrow made her return to acting after a nearly seven-year hiatus. In the new Josh Safdie film, Marty Supreme, Paltrow plays Kay Stone, a retired movie actor who becomes romantically involved with an up-and-coming ping pong star, Marty Supreme, portrayed by Timothee Chalamet. <\/p>\n

In the recently released film, the two actors filmed quite a few sex scenes where they worked with an intimacy coordinator, which Paltrow didn\u2019t know existed. <\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie. There\u2019s a lot\u2014a lot,\u201d she told Vanity Fair in March<\/a>. <\/p>\n

She explained that when Marty Supreme\u2019s intimacy coordinator asked her if she was comfortable with doing a certain move, she responded: \u201cGirl, I\u2019m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera\u2019s on.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the Iron Man star ultimately decided that working with the intimacy coordinator wasn\u2019t necessary for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe said, \u2018I think we\u2019re good.
