{"id":375433,"date":"2025-12-29T06:30:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T06:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/375433\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T06:30:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T06:30:14","slug":"haitian-migrants-intercepted-on-christmas-in-quebec-near-u-s-border-rcmp-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/375433\/","title":{"rendered":"Haitian migrants intercepted on Christmas in Quebec near U.S. border, RCMP say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Nineteen migrants of Haitian origin were arrested on Christmas in Quebec after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/royal-canadian-mounted-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/royal-canadian-mounted-police\/\">RCMP<\/a> say they illegally crossed the border from the United States on an extremely cold evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mounties say it happened in the Havelock area of Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie in southern Quebec, approximately five kilometers from the border with the state of New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">They say the people in the group were between the ages of one and 60, including a three-year-old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">RCMP say in an email that Integrated Border Police Team officers found an initial group of 15 people hiding in the woods on Thursday evening, after being notified by the United States Border Patrol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Officers continued their search until around 10:30 p.m. to find the rest of the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Eight people were taken to hospital. According to the RCMP, six of them required treatment for frostbite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe two young children were also taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. According to the information available, their lives are not in danger,\u201d the RCMP email said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">One man was also arrested by patrol officers who \u201chad reason to believe he was near the scene to pick up several of these migrants with his car.\u201d His vehicle was seized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">All of the people who were intercepted have applied for asylum, RCMP said.
