{"id":378577,"date":"2025-12-30T21:32:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T21:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/378577\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T21:32:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T21:32:12","slug":"payette-designs-engineering-building-with-a-folded-form-at-penn-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/378577\/","title":{"rendered":"Payette designs engineering building with a &#8220;folded form&#8221; at Penn State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boston architecture studio Payette has completed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/colleges\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">academic building<\/a> in central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pennsylvania\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pennsylvania<\/a> called ECoRE, which features a sculptural form and facades wrapped in reddish brick and metal fins.<\/p>\n<p>The Engineering Collaborative Research and Education Building, called ECoRE for short, is located on the university&#8217;s campus in the town of State College.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283061 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ecore-penn-state-university-payette_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x572.jpg\" alt=\"Ecore\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1586\"  \/>Payette has completed an engineering building at Penn State University<\/p>\n<p>It sits within a new engineering precinct that was master planned by <a href=\"https:\/\/payette.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Payette<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the master plan, the studio has designed two buildings for the precinct \u2013 the Engineering Design and Innovation Building, completed in 2023, and the ECoRe facility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283059 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ecore-penn-state-university-payette_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x539.jpg\" alt=\"Ecore\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1496\"  \/>The building is wrapped in reddish brick and metal fins<\/p>\n<p>The latter serves as the main hub for the College of Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Totalling 280,000 square feet (26,013 square meters), the building has five levels above grade and one below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283060 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ecore-penn-state-university-payette_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1304.jpg\" alt=\"Ecore\" width=\"1545\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The building contains labs and social spaces<\/p>\n<p>The building\u00a0features a range of functions, including high-tech\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/laboratories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">laboratories,<\/a> classrooms, offices, and social spaces. There is also a library and cafe.<\/p>\n<p>The subterranean level holds speciality research spaces, such as anechoic chambers, wind tunnels, flight simulators and a roto-craft ice-testing facility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283056 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ecore-penn-state-university-payette_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x630.jpg\" alt=\"Penn State University\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1747\"  \/>The building is roughly L-shaped in plan<\/p>\n<p>Roughly L-shaped in plan, the building is shaped with various cuts and folds, resulting in a dynamic appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The structural frame is a combination of steel and concrete.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2283052 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ecore-penn-state-university-payette_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x475.jpg\" alt=\"Penn State University\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1318\"  \/>It is organised around a central atrium<\/p>\n<p>Facades are mostly clad in iron-spot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bricks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brick<\/a>, although the southeast side, which faces the main campus, is glazed and lined with copper-anodised aluminium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/louvres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With its folded form and articulated facade, the ECoRE Building defines the arrival to the new engineering campus,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/03\/17\/payette-ragon-institute-boston\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/payette-ragon-institute-sq4-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Ragon Institute\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Payette creates sculptural Ragon Institute on triangular site in Massachusetts\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The southeast elevation overlooks a plaza and serves as the main entrance.
