India has overtaken Japan to become the world\u2019s fourth-largest economy, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of USD 4.18 trillion and is on track to surpass Germany to claim the third position by 2030, the government said in a release on economic reforms.<\/p>\n
According to the government, India\u2019s GDP is projected to reach USD 7.3 trillion by the end of the decade, which would place it behind only the United States and China among the world\u2019s largest economies.<\/p>\n
India also continues to be the fastest-growing major economy globally. Real GDP expanded by 8.2 per cent in the second quarter of the 2025\u201326 fiscal year, accelerating from 7.8 per cent in the first quarter and 7.4 per cent in the final quarter of the previous fiscal. The government said this marked a six-quarter high, reflecting the economy\u2019s resilience amid ongoing global trade uncertainties.<\/p>\n
The release said domestic factors, particularly strong private consumption, were the main drivers of growth. It added that international agencies had echoed optimism about India\u2019s outlook. The World Bank projected growth of 6.5 per cent in 2026, while Moody\u2019s expects India to remain the fastest-growing G20 economy, with growth of 6.4 per cent in 2026 and 6.5 per cent in 2027.<\/p>\n
The International Monetary Fund raised its projections to 6.6 per cent for 2025 and 6.2 per cent for 2026, while the OECD forecasts growth of 6.7 per cent in 2025 and 6.2 per cent in 2026. S&P projected growth of 6.5 per cent in the current fiscal and 6.7 per cent in the next, and the Asian Development Bank lifted its 2025 forecast to 7.2 per cent. Fitch has raised its FY26 projection to 7.4 per cent, citing stronger consumer demand.<\/p>\n
The government said inflation remains below the lower tolerance threshold, unemployment is declining and export performance is improving. Financial conditions have stayed supportive, with strong credit flows to the commercial sector and firm demand, aided by strengthening urban consumption.<\/p>\n
