{"id":379363,"date":"2025-12-31T07:19:28","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T07:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/379363\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T07:19:28","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T07:19:28","slug":"moco-vs-the-region-private-sector-employment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/379363\/","title":{"rendered":"MoCo vs the Region: Private Sector Employment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Pagnucco.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/montgomeryperspective.com\/2025\/12\/12\/mocos-economy-vs-the-region-introduction\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Part One<\/a> covered the methodology of this series.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/montgomeryperspective.com\/2025\/12\/16\/moco-vs-the-region-total-employment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Part Two<\/a> covered total employment.\u00a0 Today, let\u2019s look at data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on private sector employment in the D.C. region\u2019s ten largest jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>First, let\u2019s look at private vs government employment in MoCo since 2001, the first year in the series.\u00a0 Private employment has varied with the business cycle but it has fallen from 370,125 in 2001 to 365,667 in 2024, a drop of 1.2%.\u00a0 Meanwhile, government employment has grown from 79,756 in 2001 to 95,187 in 2024, an increase of 19.3%.\u00a0 As its private sector has stagnated, MoCo is becoming increasingly dependent on government for its jobs base.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/MoCo-Private-vs-Government-Employment-Growth-2001-24.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"779\" height=\"666\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows one-year growth of private employment in 2024 for MoCo and the other nine large jurisdictions in the region.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Private-Employment-Growth-by-Jurisdiction-2023-24.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"737\" height=\"897\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>MoCo had just 0.3% growth in total employment last year.\u00a0 That\u2019s below the region total and behind seven of our nine competitors.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows 2024 private employment as a percentage of 2019 total employment.\u00a0 This measures the degree to which each jurisdiction has bounced back from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Private-Employment-2024-Percentage-of-2019.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"902\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>MoCo\u2019s jobs base has not recovered from the pandemic and is second-to-last on this measure.\u00a0 Only Alexandria did worse.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the chart below shows total employment growth from 2007 (the year before the Great Recession) to 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49424\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Private-Employment-Growth-by-Jurisdiction-2007-24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"735\" height=\"897\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>We are one of three jurisdictions to see our private sector jobs base be lower than before the Great Recession.\u00a0 At least we\u2019re better than Alexandria.<\/p>\n<p>And remember, folks \u2013 these numbers predate President Donald Trump\u2019s second term.\u00a0 His current administration has nothing to do with them.<\/p>\n<p>Our record on total employment and private employment is decidedly weak, both short term and long term.\u00a0 We will look at establishments next.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"By Adam Pagnucco.
