{"id":379571,"date":"2025-12-31T10:04:20","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T10:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/379571\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T10:04:20","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T10:04:20","slug":"clock-is-ticking-indiana-hospitals-under-pressure-to-cut-prices-by-2029","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/379571\/","title":{"rendered":"Clock is ticking: Indiana hospitals under pressure to cut prices by 2029"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By the end of June 2029, Indiana\u2019s largest hospital systems must lower their prices to the state average or risk losing their tax-exempt status.<\/p>\n<p>INDIANAPOLIS \u2014 Multiple national studies show Indiana has some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wthr.com\/article\/news\/local\/hoosier-healthcare-expensive-cost-fees-money-mortality-out-pocket-self-insurance-employers-public-health-shortage-accountable-care-iu-fairbanks-study\/531-33a9780b-d640-47f3-8aa3-83577e15c9f0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the highest hospital prices in the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But under a law passed last year, hospitals are now facing a deadline to bring those costs down.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of June 2029, Indiana\u2019s largest hospital systems must lower their prices to the state average or risk losing their tax-exempt status, which they receive as nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Republican State Senator Travis Holdman is shining a spotlight on the issue, reviewing 2024 financial statements from Indiana\u2019s largest hospital systems and questioning what they\u2019re doing now to lower prices before that 2029 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Holdman isn\u2019t the only one pushing for change.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HoosiersForAffordableHealthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Hoosiers for Affordable Healthcare<\/a> says it has been working on the issue for the past five years and believes hospitals must first acknowledge their role in driving up costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think it would be great for them to recognize that their primary obligation is to provide the highest possible quality health care at the lowest possible price. And we just don\u2019t really see that happening. We see them providing quality health care \u2014 we don\u2019t argue that \u2014 but we\u2019ve been among the highest cost states in the country for several years, according to the independent RAND Corporation.
