Jesse Plemons seems like a pretty chill guy, with nary a bad word to say about two decades\u2019 worth of collaborators and co-stars. That equanimous vibe hit its truest testing point lately, though, when he was asked\u2014by\u00a0Entertainment Weekly\u2018s\u00a0Awardist\u00a0podcast\u2014about one of the most infamous bits on his resum\u00e9: That part in Friday Night Lights\u00a0where sweet-hearted goofball Landry beat a man to death with an iron pipe.<\/p>\n

Introduced in the show\u2019s second season, the Landry murder plot is, of course, infamous among\u00a0FNL fans, and Plemons has been asked about it before. (Noting, all the way back in 2012<\/a>, that he struggled with making the long-running story feel realistic.) Still, it\u2019s fascinating to hear how diplomatic he can be when asked about it now, telling\u00a0EW\u00a0that he viewed the plotline as \u201ca double-edged sword\u201d because \u201cOn the one hand, I was as shocked as everyone to read that script where the comedic relief kills for love in high school. But at the same time, I don\u2019t think I could allow myself to question it too much, because it was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Honestly, the harshest he\u2019ll get is calling the plotline\u2014which ultimately, in Plemons\u2019 own words, got \u201cswept under the rug\u201d in the show\u2019s next season\u2014a \u201creally extreme storyline that does not seem too rooted in something realistic.\u201d And even then, he frames it as a challenge for himself, not the show\u2019s writing team, which was gearing up for the 2007 WGA strike as the season was being filmed. Plemons says he remembered asking himself, \u201cHow am I going to not sink the show with this and try and keep it as real as everything else?\u201d Not that there weren\u2019t practicalities to consider, too: Plemons notes that multiple versions of the murder were attempted, saying, \u201cI did end up killing him multiple times with bottles and then we reshot it with a pipe or something. It\u2019s a weird, weird, weird thing we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, Friday Night Lights eventually moved past Landry-Hits-A-Guy-So-Hard-With-A-Pipe-That-He-Dies-Gate, with Plemons starring in four of the show\u2019s eventual five seasons.<\/p>\n
