Astronomers have now, for the first time, measured the mass of, and distance to, one of these lonely worlds.<\/p>\n<p>The planet packs about a fifth of the mass of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-weirdest-facts-about-jupiter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73113\" data-postid=\"187182\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Jupiter<\/a>, and is located a little under 10,000 light-years away from Earth, towards the center of our galaxy. That size suggests it most likely formed as part of a planetary system, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rogue-planet-the-size-of-earth-found-drifting-through-the-dark-on-its-own\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">being exiled<\/a> by a game of gravitational billiards.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/record-smashing-rogue-planet-caught-growing-at-6-billion-tons-per-second\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Record-Smashing Rogue Planet Caught Growing at 6 Billion Tons Per Second<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being small and dim, these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rogue-planets-floating-in-space-appear-to-be-forming-their-own-moons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rogue planets<\/a> can&#8217;t be directly seen. Instead, astronomers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/jwst-has-spotted-six-rogue-planets-without-a-star-to-call-home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">usually spot them<\/a> due to their effects on distant light. As they pass between us and a bright background object, such as a star, the gravitational influence of the planet acts like a lens and briefly magnifies or warps the light.<\/p>\n<p>To figure out the mass of a lensing object, you generally need to know how far away it is \u2013 and a planet flying solo provides few context clues, so it&#8217;s hard to calculate its distance.<\/p>\n<p>But in this case, astronomers got lucky. The initial lensing event was spotted independently by multiple ground-based telescopes in Chile, South Africa, and Australia on 3 May 2024. It was also observed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/astronomers-just-discovered-the-biggest-explosions-since-the-big-bang\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now-retired Gaia Space Telescope<\/a> six times over a 16-hour period.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Dong-adv9266-image-2-642x457.jpg\" alt=\"Giant 3D Glasses Let Astronomers Weigh a Rogue Planet For The First Time\" width=\"642\" height=\"457\" class=\"wp-image-187188 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A diagram illustrating how the gravitational lensing event caused an apparent change in brightness, which was observed from Earth-based telescopes and Gaia in space, allowing its distance and mass to be calculated. Skowron\/OGLE<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the kicker: At the time of the microlensing event, Gaia was located 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, giving it a slightly different view of the sky from the telescopes on the ground.
