The Miami Dolphins are reportedly hiring Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN announcer Troy Aikman as a consultant to aid in their search for a new general manager, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter<\/a> and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Per Schefter, “It is not a permanent role, but he will be an adviser throughout the process for the Dolphins’ next general manager. Miami ownership wanted an outside respected perspective from someone who had strong relationships across the league. Aikman brings this after more than three decades as an NFL player and broadcaster.”<\/p>\n

Aikman’s consulting gig in Miami won’t interfere with his responsibilities calling games for ESPN as the network’s Monday Night Football analyst. Pelissero also noted that Aikman isn’t considered a candidate himself and isn’t expected to continue having a role with the team after a general manager is hired.<\/p>\n

He will sit in during interviews with prospective candidates, however. <\/p>\n

The Dolphins fired former general manager Chris Grier this season after the team started 2-7. Champ Kelly has operated as the interim GM.<\/p>\n

Pelissero reported that “sources say the Dolphins’ focus for their next GM is on a strong scouting background. Interviews are expected to begin next week.”<\/p>\n

The big question will be whether the new general manager inherits head coach Mike McDaniel or has some say on that position. McDaniel likely would be a hot name in both head-coaching and offensive coordinator searches if he was fired.<\/p>\n

ESPN’s Dan Graziano<\/a> reported Wednesday that he was “hearing conflicting things on Miami; for a while it sounded as if McDaniel was a good bet to stay, but lately the winds seem to have shifted a bit on that, so we’ll see where that lands.”<\/p>\n

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler added that McDaniel “still has some support in Miami. We will see if that’s enough. He has made a case to stay. From what I’ve gathered, the Dolphins’ GM search won’t necessarily be centered around fitting with McDaniel; it’s more so about finding the best team fit in general.”<\/p>\n

The quarterback position almost assuredly will be a priority for the new general manager, however, after McDaniel benched<\/a> Tua Tagovailoa in December, opting to allow rookie Quinn Ewers to finish out the season. Miami has gone 1-1 with Ewers as the starter. <\/p>\n
