which posted McIlroy\u2019s episode on Friday morning<\/a>, McIlroy argued that LIV players such as Bryson DeChambeau have already \u201cpaid their consequence\u201d for joining the Saudi-backed rival league, which launched in 2022.<\/p>\n\u201cThey\u2019ve made the money, but they\u2019ve paid their consequence in terms of the reputation and some of the things they\u2019ve lost by going over there,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cIf it made the overall tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else, I would be OK with it. But again, it\u2019s not just me, and I recognize that not everyone is in my position. It would be up to the collective group of PGA Tour members to make that decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
McIlroy\u2019s comments come as DeChambeau is reportedly still negotiating his next LIV deal before the league\u2019s 2026 season begins in February. Also, Brooks Koepka, who bolted the PGA Tour during LIV\u2019s inaugural season, announced last month that he would not be returning to LIV; the PGA Tour has yet to comment on a potential pathway back for the five-time major champion.<\/p>\n
The decision on if and how LIV players would be integrated back into the PGA Tour, McIlroy says, is ultimately up to the players. He said that it\u2019s \u201chard to see any sort of resolution\u201d in the near future, but asked if he saw the sport being reunited in \u201ctwo or three years,\u201d McIlroy responded, \u201cI think it does.\u201d<\/p>\n
Perhaps factoring into McIlroy\u2019s belief is his uncertainty on LIV\u2019s sustainability.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve watched a little bit of it and it\u2019s just, it\u2019s not, I don\u2019t know \u2013 and maybe it\u2019s just I\u2019m too much of a traditionalist to get it, but it just doesn\u2019t seem to have anything,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cLike they were coming into the game saying, \u2018We\u2019re gonna be different, we\u2019re gonna be this, we\u2019re gonna be that.\u2019 Even the fact they\u2019ve now switched from 54 holes to 72 holes to get world-ranking points, so it\u2019s like, you\u2019re just doing what everyone else is doing. So, what\u2019s different, you know, apart from the money?\u201d<\/p>\n
McIlroy added: \u201cThey\u2019ve spent billions on LIV, like the PIF and so on.
