Great news, America: Somebody\u2018s got a crush, as Bari Weiss\u2019 CBS News pulled the national news organization version of that stunt with Andrew Lincoln and the cue cards from Love Actually tonight. Specifically, the organization\u2014which is gearing up for the installation of new anchor Tony Dokoupil in the hot seat at CBS Evening News on Monday, January 5\u2014released a new statement of \u201cprinciples\u201d for the long-running news program<\/a>. Number 4 is where it gets full-on mash note, declaring, \u201cWe love America. And we make no apologies for saying so.\u201d<\/p>\n

As if we weren\u2019t already blushing hard enough, the statement then goes from \u201cBold declaration at the Thanksgiving dinner table\u201d to full on messianic worship, saying that, \u201cOur foundational values of liberty, equality and the rule of law make us the last best hope on Earth.\u201d (The statement doesn\u2019t clarify when it comes to the topic of last best hope for what, which is probably for the best.) The statement then explains how CBS Evening News feels like it can fit into a relationship with its national paramour, who even it has to admit is kind of high maintenance: \u201cWe also believe in Franklin\u2019s famous line about America as a republic\u2014if we can keep it. We aim to do our part every night: One way to think about our show is as a daily conversation about exactly where we are as a country and where we are going.\u201d<\/p>\n

It feels telling that CBS News was careful to note that its new five basic values replace a 38-page handbook Evening News was previously running with, because that\u2019s part of the overall tone of the shift: Less complexity, less thought, less expertise, and way more platitudes. (Dokoupil gave a statement yesterday<\/a> in which he said the national news media had leaned too much on \u201cacademics and elites\u201d in its coverage of various topics in recent years.) The other four principles basically boil down to enthusiastic presentations of similar \u201cHow many boots do we have to lick before you stop yelling at us?\u201d ideals, including \u201cWe work for you,\u201d \u201cWe report on the world as it is,\u201d \u201cWe respect you,\u201d and \u201cWe respect tradition, but we also believe in the future.\u201d All of which, as far as we can tell, adds up to something like \u201cless experts, more \u2018both sides\u2019 presentations of right-wing talking points, and we don\u2019t mind if you watch us on our phones.\u201d And if that\u2019s not the exact definition of love and respect, what is?<\/p>\n
