\n South Africa\u2019s benchmark equity index rose as much as 0.9% before paring gains, led by advances in precious metals and mining stocks.\n <\/p>\n
\n Michael Grobler, strategist at Ashburton Fund Managers Ltd., described the rand as \u201cshort-term overbought,\u201d likely to consolidate around 16.50\u201316.70 per dollar after a strong year-end performance.\n <\/p>\n
\n Key risks include a resurgent U.S. dollar, profit-taking in precious metals, and renewed geopolitical tensions that could push oil prices higher. \u201cIn the short and medium term, the rand\u2019s performance will be closely tied to a continuing bull market in metals,\u201d Grobler said.\n <\/p>\n
\n As confidence in the rand grows, the Reserve Bank is simultaneously preparing a major cash system revamp, aimed at lowering costs and improving access through a cash-management utility, new ATMs, and stricter circulation controls.\n <\/p>\n
\n The reforms would mark the biggest change to cash circulation since the introduction of ATMs more than 40 years ago.\n <\/p>\n
