He might even start on a line with Dylan Larkin and Marco Kasper. That\u2019s where Elmer Soderblom skated Sunday in practice, but he might have been holding Leonard\u2019s spot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2026\/01\/whats-my-line-losses-prompt-radical-changes-for-red-wings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2026\/01\/whats-my-line-losses-prompt-radical-changes-for-red-wings.html\">as coach Todd McLellan shuffled three lines.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C2EE6VHIJ5G3FEPONQC5PQVRBU\">Leonard ranks second in the AHL with 20 goals and has 32 points in 23 games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NXSRNI7XUNEANOEESA27HC3YIQ\">He had two goals and two assists in seven games with the Red Wings from Dec. 16-28, replacing the injured Patrick Kane on the line with Andrew Copp and Alex DeBrincat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2025\/12\/red-wings-reassign-john-leonard-to-grand-rapids-griffins.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/redwings\/2025\/12\/red-wings-reassign-john-leonard-to-grand-rapids-griffins.html\">He was reassigned on Dec. 29.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TC3YGUUVQJDYNMRDN4H2Q2UZH4\">\u201cHe\u2019s a player that can play and help us,\u201d McLellan said last week. \u201cThings can happen with our roster. Injuries can occur. Players can play their way out of the lineup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DBVDKKOQR5BOTPPFEVHBKJWM7U\">\u201cWe saw what we expected to see from him. He had some pace to his game. He was an offensive threat. He handled himself well on the power play.
