{"id":39004,"date":"2025-07-26T15:27:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T15:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/39004\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T15:27:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T15:27:09","slug":"colbert-axed-after-hosting-176-liberals-one-conservative-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/39004\/","title":{"rendered":"Colbert axed after hosting 176 liberals, one conservative: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Embattled funnyman Stephen Colbert\u2019s \u201cLate Show\u201d became a \u201ctherapy\u201d session for the left \u2014 and it\u2019s no surprise viewers took notice, a new study found.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2022, Colbert has hosted 176 left-leaning guests and only one Republican on soon-to-be cancelled \u201cThe Late Show,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/newsbusters.org\/blogs\/nb\/alex-christy\/2025\/07\/01\/study-late-night-comedy-shows-begin-2025-99-percent-guests-being\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> according to a study<\/a> by media watchdog NewsBusters \u2014 a staggering imbalance that has tracked with his 2025 guest list.<\/p>\n<p>In just the first six months of this year, the show booked 43 left-leaning political guests \u2014 and zero conservatives \u2014 leading all late-night programs in partisan tilt.<\/p>\n<p>A study conducted by media watchdog NewsBusters reveals that \u201cThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert\u201d has hosted 176 left-leaning guests and only one Republican since 2022. Scott Kowalchyk\/CBS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColbert\u2019s show has been late-night group therapy for liberals,\u201d NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck told The Post. \u201cAmericans have continually shown they no longer have the time or patience for such partisan sneering masquerading as comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colbert\u2019s roster included 14 Democratic politicians and 29 liberal journalists or celebrities, including socialist Big Apple lawmakers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ClNKD_6ow-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani and City Comptroller Brad Lander<\/a>, plus big-name Democrats like Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Cory Booker.<\/p>\n<p>The media crowd featured MSNBC\u2019s Chris Hayes, HBO\u2019s John Oliver and New York Times columnist Ezra Klein.<\/p>\n<p>Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) was the only conservative to appear on \u201cThe Late Show\u201d since 2022, making her Colbert\u2019s lone right-leaning guest during that period. <\/p>\n<p>The two<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/nb\/alex-christy\/2023\/12\/12\/colbert-blames-gop-undercutting-media-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> sparred on-air<\/a> in December 2023, with Cheney pushing back against Colbert\u2019s critiques of the GOP and Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Cheney has since been a notorious critic of Trump, consistently speaking out against his influence in the Republican party and even <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/03\/us-news\/liz-cheney-to-campaign-for-kamala-harris-in-ripon-wisconsin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">campaigning with Kamala Harris<\/a> during the 2024 election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Colbert booked 43 liberals and no conservatives in 2025, topping late night\u2019s partisan guest list, the study shows. Scott Kowalchyk\/CBS<\/p>\n<p>Colbert also hosted former Illinois Republican congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/10\/29\/gop-trump-critic-adam-kinzinger-wont-seek-reelection-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Adam Kinzinger<\/a> in January 2025, though the study did not count him in the tally due to his repeated criticism of Trump and comments aligning with Democrats \u2014 including a 2024 interview where he said there\u2019s \u201cnothing more conservative\u201d than voting for Kamala Harris, Houck said.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s release came a few weeks before CBS announced \u201cThe Late Show\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/17\/entertainment\/late-show-with-stephen-colbert-canceled-by-cbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> will be canceled<\/a> in May 2026. <\/p>\n<p>The network cited massive<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/18\/media\/cbs-ending-the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert-is-more-than-just-a-financial-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> financial losses<\/a> and called the move \u201cpurely a financial decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the timing raised eyebrows.<\/p>\n<p>Just three days earlier, Colbert used his June 30 monologue to slam CBS parent company Paramount Global for settling a<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/07\/media\/trump-says-60-minutes-lawsuit-settlement-is-more-than-paramount-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> $16 million defamation lawsuit with Donald Trump<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The settlement helped clear the way for Paramount\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/11\/media\/why-fcc-chair-will-continue-to-throttle-paramount-skydance-merger-despite-trump-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> $8 billion merger<\/a> with Skydance Media \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/24\/media\/fcc-greenlights-8-4b-sale-of-cbs-parent-paramount-to-skydance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">deal approved Thursday<\/a> by the Trump-led Federal Communications Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a \u2018big fat bribe,\u2019\u201d Colbert <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/22\/media\/jon-stewart-tears-into-paramount-over-cbs-canceling-stephen-colbert\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whined to viewers<\/a> and warned, \u201cThey left me alive. And now for the next 10 months, the gloves are off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The jab sparked speculation that the cancellation wasn\u2019t just about ratings or revenue. <\/p>\n<p>Some CBS staffers reportedly<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/21\/media\/cbs-staffer-calls-stephen-colbert-cancellation-a-chilling-of-free-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> called the decision \u201cchilling,\u201d<\/a> while others said the numbers spoke for themselves \u2014 pointing to The Late Show\u2019s massive $100 million-plus annual budget and costly $40 to $50 million yearly losses, all while its audience keeps shrinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYear after year of this show has been defined by unrepentant sneering, visceral hatred for more than half the country,\u201d Houck said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo between that and the precipitous decline in linear TV subscribers providing a steady revenue stream, Paramount was left with no choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 2022, NewsBusters tracked 511 liberal or Democratic guests across late-night TV, compared to just 14 conservatives and Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>The study covered the shows of five major late-night hosts: Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon and The Daily Show.<\/p>\n<p>CBS plans to cancel \u201cThe Late Show\u201d in May 2026 amid steep financial losses. Scott Kowalchyk\/CBS<\/p>\n<p>In the first six months of 2025, \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d stacked 32 left-leaning guests, Meyers had 16, Kimmel 10 and Fallon five. <\/p>\n<p>Not a single conservative, aside from \u201cThe Daily Show\u2019s\u201d lone outlier: policy expert Oren Cass who spoke on Trump-era tariffs,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbusters.org\/blogs\/nb\/alex-christy\/2025\/01\/08\/last-six-months-2024-99-percent-late-night-comedy-guests-were\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> NewsBusters<\/a> found.<\/p>\n<p>Their tally found 106 of 107 guests \u2014 spanning partisan officials and journalists or celebrities who discussed politics \u2014 leaned left, for a 99% liberal tilt.<\/p>\n<p>Cass, who praised \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d host Jon Stewart for being open-minded and \u201cgenuinely interested\u201d during his own March appearance, said Colbert seemed to be more focused on \u201creinforcing a dogmatic worldview and trying to preach to a choir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKeep up with today\u2019s most important news\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStay up on the very latest with Evening Update.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Colbert, who did not return a request for comment, will stay on air through next spring. <\/p>\n<p>Over at rival networks, Kimmel is set to film the final season of his three-year deal this fall, while Fallon and Meyers re-upped last year to stay on through 2028.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump\u2019s former chief strategist Steve Bannon said a serious review is needed of the companies producing late night TV shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Federal Election Commission and [Department of Justice] must commence an immediate investigation into these companies for illegal campaign contributions,\u201d he told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a deeply ingrained pattern of criminal behavior to assist the Democratic Party.
