{"id":390251,"date":"2026-01-06T02:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T02:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/390251\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T02:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T02:14:13","slug":"which-s-f-street-did-you-vote-to-rename-for-claude-the-alligator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/390251\/","title":{"rendered":"Which S.F. street did you vote to rename for Claude the Alligator?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1, Mission Local closed <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/12\/sf-claude-albino-alligator-street-name-poll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its official poll<\/a> on which Golden Gate Park street should be renamed for the dearly departed <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/12\/claude-albino-alligator-obituary-cal-academy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Claude the albino alligator<\/a>. The beloved city mascot <a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2025\/12\/calacademys-albino-alligator-claude-has-died-after-30-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died of cancer last month at age 30<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The poll accompanies <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=15036834&amp;GUID=B62089F0-E1BB-435A-952B-D36EFCCE3DC6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legislation<\/a> introduced last year by District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar \u2014\u00a0Claude\u2019s former supervisor \u2014\u00a0to rename a street. While not binding, the results of this poll \u201cwill inform the decision of the Recreation and Parks Commission which is set to vote on the matter later this month,\u201d notes Melgar\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>But which street? Readers were offered five choices. And it wasn\u2019t close: Of 6,900 total votes, 3,953 went to Music Concourse Drive between JFK Drive and MLK Jr. Drive. That\u2019s a 57 percent tally in a five-way race.<\/p>\n<p>That easily outpaced Eighth Avenue between Fulton Street and JFK Drive (278 votes, 4 percent); Bowl Drive between Music Concourse Drive and Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive (539 votes, 8 percent); the unnamed road behind the Music Concourse between Music Concourse Drive and Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive (1,957 votes, 28 percent) and 10th Avenue between Fulton Street and JFK Drive (173 votes, 3 percent). <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"g-claude_streets-desktop-img\" class=\"g-claude_streets-desktop-img g-aiImg\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/claude_streets-desktop-1.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-pstyle2\">California Academy <\/p>\n<p class=\"g-pstyle2\">of Sciences<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"g-claude_streets-mobile-img\" class=\"g-claude_streets-mobile-img g-aiImg\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/claude_streets-mobile-1.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"g-pstyle0\">California <\/p>\n<p class=\"g-pstyle0\">Academy <\/p>\n<p class=\"g-pstyle0\">of Sciences<\/p>\n<p class=\"map-caption\">Graphic by Kelly Waldron. Basemap from Google Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps not coincidentally, the winning entry is both the longest street on the list and the one that runs right past the California Academy of Sciences \u2014 where Claude resided from 2008 until his death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people have spoken and there is overwhelming support for Music Concourse Drive to adopt the moniker \u2018Claude the Alligator Way,\u2019\u201d said Melgar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor generations to come, a stroll in the park or a visit to the Academy of Sciences will still remind all of Claude\u2019s fans and followers of his impact.
