Over the past few days, we\u2019ve seen a flood of coaching talent hit the market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">The <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/atlanta-falcons-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta Falcons<\/a> fired Raheem Morris, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/cleveland-browns-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> parted ways with Kevin Stefanski, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/las-vegas-raiders-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Las Vegas Raiders<\/a> moved on from Pete Carroll and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/arizona-cardinals-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Arizona Cardinals<\/a> let go Jonathan Gannon. And on Tuesday, the <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/baltimore-ravens-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore Ravens<\/a> parted ways with John Harbaugh after 18 seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Those moves are in addition to the in-season firings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/new-york-giants-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York Giants<\/a> coach Brian Daboll and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/tennessee-titans-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tennessee Titans<\/a> coach Brian Callahan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Who are the best candidates to fill these <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL<\/a> head-coaching vacancies? My list may not include some of the reported top candidates around the league, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/kansas-city-chiefs-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Chiefs<\/a> offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/buffalo-bills-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bills<\/a> OC Joe Brady and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/san-francisco-49ers-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">49ers<\/a> defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, but they\u2019re\u00a0my top nine candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/nfl\/ranking-nfl-head-coach-vacancies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ranking the 7 NFL Head Coaching Vacancies<\/a> ]<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">&#8212; &#8212; &#8212;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>9. <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/washington-commanders-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Commanders<\/a> former offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Kingsbury is a former NFL (and college) head coach who struggled in his first go-round. With the Cardinals from 2019 through 2022, Kingsbury went 28-37-1. He is also coming off a rough season in Washington, with <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/washington-commanders-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Commanders<\/a> QB <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/jayden-daniels-player\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jayden Daniels<\/a> dealing with injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Despite all that, the 46-year-old Kingsbury is a well-respected offensive mind \u2014 and that never goes out of style.<\/p>\n<p><img  width=\"640\" height=\"427\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has not been shy about his interest in becoming an NFL head coach again. (Photo by David Berding\/Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p> 8. <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/denver-broncos-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Broncos<\/a> defensive coordinator Vance Joseph<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">It\u2019s wild that Denver&#8217;s current defensive coordinator used to be the team\u2019s head coach \u2014 as recently as 2018. Joseph, 53, isn\u2019t the buzziest candidate. His 11-21 head-coaching record during his <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/denver-broncos-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Broncos<\/a> tenure is what hampers his candidacy even now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">But Joseph has run an incredible defense at basically every stop of his career. That\u2019s how he got the first shot as a head coach and that\u2019s why he\u2019ll get another. But much like former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/detroit-lions-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lions<\/a> OC Ben Johnson did recently, Joseph should sit tight and wait for the right opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>7. <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/green-bay-packers-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Packers<\/a> DC Jeff Hafley<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">The Green Bay defense hasn\u2019t quite been the same since the injury to star edge rusher <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/micah-parsons-player\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Micah Parsons<\/a>, but that doesn\u2019t mean Hafley hasn\u2019t done a strong job. It stands to reason that \u2014 much like an offense will struggle after losing a QB \u2014 the defense would decline following the loss of its most important player.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">But look back at 2024 when Hafley first stepped into the role. His unit jumped to sixth in points allowed and fourth in takeaways.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/nfl\/i-had-stopped-coaching-how-packers-jeff-hafley-found-himself-return-nfl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The guy is absolutely obsessed with coaching<\/a> \u2014 his love for the game is real. And I could see him excelling as a head coach with the right offensive coordinator.<\/p>\n<p><img  width=\"640\" height=\"427\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has extensive NFL experience as an assistant and was the head coach at Boston College from 2020 to 2023 before joining Green Bay. (Photo by Larry Radloff\/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p> 6. <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/los-angeles-rams-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rams<\/a> DC Chris Shula<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">By many metrics, Shula\u2019s unit is a top-10 defense. Yes, he has 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/jared-verse-player\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jared Verse<\/a> making splash plays, but Shula has built a solid overall unit, one that just may contribute to a <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/super-bowl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super Bowl<\/a> run. His r\u00e9sum\u00e9 should only get more impressive as the <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/los-angeles-rams-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rams<\/a> advance in the playoffs. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/nfl\/nfl-playoff-predictions-every-round-picked-ending-bills-vs-rams-super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">I think they could very well win the Super Bowl.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>5. <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chargers<\/a> DC Jesse Minter<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Much of what I just said about Shula is true about Minter. There\u2019s a lot of buzz around both defensive coordinators in L.A. But I like Minter best. He has worked at the NFL and college levels for both Jim and John Harbaugh. So the pedigree is impressive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">And then there\u2019s the matter of the <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chargers<\/a>&#8216; defensive stats: sixth in points allowed (20.1), fifth in yards allowed (288.1), eighth in EPA\/play (-.12) and 12th in defensive success rate (41.6). Minter has done all that with only one household name \u2014 safety <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/derwin-james-player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Derwin James Jr.<\/a> That\u2019s proof of a smart coach who NFL teams can build around.<\/p>\n<p><img  width=\"640\" height=\"427\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Chargers DC Jesse Minter celebrates with cornerback Donte Jackson after an interception against the Eagles at SoFi Stadium. (Robert Gauthier\/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p> 4. <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/seattle-seahawks-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seahawks<\/a> OC Klint Kubiak<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Kubiak has put together a really compelling season in terms of 1) managing quarterback <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/sam-darnold-player\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Darnold<\/a> through ups and downs, 2) elevating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/jaxon-smith-njigba-player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jaxon Smith-Njigba<\/a> into the conversation as the league\u2019s best receiver and 3) building a physical offensive line around complementary running backs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/ken-walker-iii-player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kenneth Walker<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/zach-charbonnet-player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Zach Charbonnet<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">There\u2019s no such thing as &#8220;Offensive Coordinator of the Year,&#8221; but for me, it would come down to Kubiak and the <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/new-england-patriots-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patriots<\/a>\u2019 Josh McDaniels. Kubiak has been that good as a complement to <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/seattle-seahawks-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seahawks<\/a> defensive-minded head coach Mike Macdonald. For that reason, Kubiak could easily step out on his own.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/minnesota-vikings-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vikings<\/a> DC Brian Flores\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Just about everyone spent the past few seasons talking about head coach Kevin O\u2019Connell and the <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/minnesota-vikings-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vikings<\/a>&#8216; offense. But it was the defense that kept Minnesota afloat in 2025 by way of impressive talent development and deployment. Flores might have been the best coach on this team this season. He put together a defense that gave the league\u2019s top QBs fits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">For multiple reasons, his time as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/miami-dolphins-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dolphins<\/a>&#8216; head coach might hurt him. Not only did he seem to lose Miami&#8217;s locker room at the end of his tenure, he then filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/45973801\/court-agrees-brian-flores-suit-vs-nfl-3-teams-go-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">which is still ongoing<\/a>) that alleged racial discrimination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Would an NFL organization hire him as head coach in the middle of that? Former <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/cleveland-browns-team\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Browns<\/a> coach Kevin Stefanski<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Stefanski&#8217;s firing by Cleveland might&#8217;ve been the best thing for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">He will instantly be a hot commodity. There really aren\u2019t many top offensive minds available, which works in Stefanski\u2019s favor. And there aren\u2019t many organizations that are as much of an institutional failure as the Browns, which \u2014 again \u2014 works in his favor. But Stefanksi proved competent, even as his roster eroded in part because of the disastrous <a class=\"entity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/deshaun-watson-player\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deshaun Watson<\/a> trade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/baltimore-ravens-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ravens<\/a> coach John Harbaugh<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">John Harbaugh is the best coach available on the open market. And the Baltimore Ravens are the best opening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">But when the Ravens lost the AFC North title game in Week 18, <a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/nfl\/sound-smart-8-observations-from-nfl-week-18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">it should have been clear to everyone<\/a> that Harbaugh wasn\u2019t the best coach for Baltimore anymore \u2014 even if he is now the best coach for basically every one of the other six teams with an opening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Harbaugh\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is excellent. He\u2019s a Super Bowl champion. He\u2019s a former Coach of the Year. He drafted and developed a pocket passer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/joe-flacco-player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Joe Flacco<\/a> (out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/college-football\/delaware-blue-hens-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Delaware<\/a>!?). And then he drafted and developed a dual-threat quarterback in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/lamar-jackson-player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lamar Jackson<\/a> (out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/college-football\/louisville-cardinals-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Louisville<\/a>). His head coaching record is 180-113. His postseason record is 13-11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-746446fd=\"\">Harbaugh doesn\u2019t fall in the category of Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll \u2014 older coaches who maybe have seen the game pass them by. No, Harbaugh has many good years left.
