{"id":394009,"date":"2026-01-07T23:15:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T23:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/394009\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T23:15:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T23:15:10","slug":"whats-next-after-finale-not-a-bonus-episode","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/394009\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Next After Finale (Not a Bonus Episode)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/stranger-things\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stranger-things_1\" data-tag=\"stranger-things\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stranger Things<\/a> has officially closed the door on Hawkins and the Upside Down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNetflix\u2019s mega-hit sci-fi saga from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/duffer-brothers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_duffer-brothers_1\" data-tag=\"duffer-brothers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Duffer brothers<\/a> released its supersized final episode on New Year\u2019s Eve to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/stranger-things-5-finale-netfllix-ratings-top-10-all-time-1236465845\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/stranger-things-5-finale-netfllix-ratings-top-10-all-time-1236465845\/\">record-breaking viewership<\/a> for the streamer and an estimated $20-$25 million in theater chain revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCreators Matt and Ross Duffer put much care into sticking the landing after a decade and five seasons (the last of which released in three parts over the 2025 holidays). The Duffers, who co-directed the finale, \u201cChapter Eight: The Rightside Up,\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/stranger-things-cast-react-final-scenes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/stranger-things-cast-react-final-scenes\/\">consulted all of their actors<\/a> for input on their endings, used red hard-to-read scripts and limited distribution in order to keep the ending a surprise outside of the cast and crew inner circle, and they even included an Easter egg in the series finale to tease where the Stranger Things franchise will go in the near future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThey also <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-series-finale-eleven-fate-duffers-interview-1236462569\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-series-finale-eleven-fate-duffers-interview-1236462569\/\">made it clear to The Hollywood Reporter <\/a>that the final shot of the Wheelers\u2019 basement door closing meant that this main story with this current cast is over, for good. \u201cMike\u2019s [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/finn-wolfhard\/\" id=\"auto-tag_finn-wolfhard_1\" data-tag=\"finn-wolfhard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Finn Wolfhard<\/a>] closing the basement door. We\u2019re closing the door on the story. That\u2019s one reason we had the closing credits the way we did, because it was a way of saying: \u2018This is finite. This is the end of their story. It\u2019s the end of the story of Mike and Eleven [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/millie-bobby-brown\/\" id=\"auto-tag_millie-bobby-brown_1\" data-tag=\"millie-bobby-brown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Millie Bobby Brown<\/a>] and Joyce [Winona Ryder] and Hopper [David Harbour],&#8217;\u201d said Matt Duffer. \u201cSo, no, there\u2019s no plan or intention to [revisit] the story because it\u2019s a coming-of age story. Ultimately, that\u2019s what it\u2019s supposed to be. That\u2019s what the show always was. When he closes the door to the basement, he\u2019s closing the door on his childhood and he\u2019s moving onto adulthood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSo, why have fans been speculating that Stranger Things, the flagship series \u2014 which the producing team refers to as the \u201cmother ship\u201d \u2014 isn\u2019t really over? An online theory dubbed \u201cConformity Gate\u201d has gone viral from fans speculating that the Duffer brothers and Netflix have a \u201cbonus episode\u201d set for a surprise drop on Wednesday. The theory stemmed from fans suggesting the ending was actually an illusion created by villain Vecna (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jamie-campbell-bower\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jamie-campbell-bower_1\" data-tag=\"jamie-campbell-bower\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jamie Campbell Bower<\/a>), with the \u201creal\u201d ending still forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile Netflix and\/or the creators have not officially commented since the theory went viral \u2014 which has only fueled the theory more \u2014 The Hollywood Reporter has bad news: There is no bonus episode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe show\u2019s official bios on <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.instagram.com%2Fstrangerthingstv%2F%3Fhl%3Den&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cjackie.strause%40thr.com%7Cc48b9ae3ca7f4042fbd308de4e108196%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C639034030039204316%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=lCTiIeTy03pulNqA9p%2BY1ExKT4%2FtcliHU4qqrcwpT3E%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fx.com%2FStranger_Things&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cjackie.strause%40thr.com%7Cc48b9ae3ca7f4042fbd308de4e108196%7Ce950f25546e44144a778a6ff4f557492%7C0%7C0%7C639034030039246442%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=IFJaJHbfSPUa3kGmMbb9RwSt6NXIf0SK%2BqA2RLYDJ7E%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TikTok<\/a> clearly read that \u201cAll episodes of Stranger Things are now playing.\u201d In addition, the creators and cast have given many interviews \u2014 including to THR \u2014 about the show officially ending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn their chat with THR about the series finale, the Duffer brothers said the audiences in the finale theater they attended reacted \u201cexactly how they wanted them to\u201d and that they and their actors feel \u201creally good\u201d with how they ended the show. The Duffers have always known what the final scene of the series would be and have used it as their north star throughout making the entire series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOf that moment (spoiler alert!) \u2014 when the teen cast played by Wolfhard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/noah-schnapp\/\" id=\"auto-tag_noah-schnapp_1\" data-tag=\"noah-schnapp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Schnapp<\/a>, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sadie-sink\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sadie-sink_1\" data-tag=\"sadie-sink\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sadie Sink<\/a> put away their Dungeons &amp; Dragons books in a passing-of-the-torch scene \u2014 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-series-finale-eleven-fate-duffers-interview-1236462569\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-series-finale-eleven-fate-duffers-interview-1236462569\/\">Matt Duffer told THR:<\/a> \u201cI can\u2019t imagine doing it any other way, but also, that\u2019s not them acting. When they\u2019re putting away their books and walking away, that\u2019s them saying goodbye to the show. So, that\u2019s the most emotional and heartbreaking shot we ever did on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe ensemble also <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/stranger-things-cast-react-final-scenes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/stranger-things-cast-react-final-scenes\/\">shared<\/a> their emotional reactions to filming each of their final scenes, elaborating on how they have become \u201ccore memories,\u201d calling their endings \u201cperfect.\u201d Noah Schnapp told <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/stranger-things-cast-react-final-scenes\/noah-schnapp-will-byers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/stranger-things-cast-react-final-scenes\/noah-schnapp-will-byers\/\">THR<\/a>, \u201cThey really left nothing more to be told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cAs far as the finale is concerned, the most important thing to us is that we needed it to work and feel really great to me and Ross, who\u2019ve been writing the show for 10 years. But we needed it to work and resonate with the actors because they\u2019ve been living and breathing these characters better than anybody,\u201d Matt Duffer added to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-series-finale-eleven-fate-duffers-interview-1236462569\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-series-finale-eleven-fate-duffers-interview-1236462569\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">THR<\/a>. \u201cAnd the fact that it did resonate as deeply and that they\u2019re all as happy as they are means more to us than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThere are, however, two loose threads. But only one of them points to where the franchise is going next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe major looming question in the series finale (spoiler!) revolved around Eleven\u2019s (Brown) fate, and if she really sacrificed herself or faked her death, as Mike (Wolfhard) posited at the end of the series. The Duffers intentionally are not confirming either way, saying their intention is to leave it open ended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe characters can\u2019t know and the audience can\u2019t know because then it puts Eleven in danger and her sacrifice was for nothing,\u201d Matt Duffer told THR. \u201cSo there\u2019s a point in not knowing. The boys obviously choose to believe. I\u2019m not sure what the majority of people are thinking, but dipping my toes a little bit into social media, it seems like people are choosing to believe and are going to Mike Wheeler route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat doesn\u2019t have to stop the cast from speculating (Sink said on<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qUK4TjFlnSE\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qUK4TjFlnSE\"> The Tonight Show<\/a> that she thinks Eleven is dead). But the creators actually wanted to point viewers in another, new direction: the Henry Creel rock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s lingering questions about the rock and where the rock came from and the scientist and all of that,\u201d Matt Duffer told THR of the series finale\u2019s explanation of how Vecna\/Henry Creel (Bower) got his powers when he was younger in the cave. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat question will, in fact, connect with the forthcoming live-action spinoff that the Duffers are currently developing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe had said that there is something in the finale that is going to connect to the spinoff. The spinoff is not about rocks or mining the rocks, but I would say that\u2019s the loose end that\u2019s not tied up that will be tied up,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-volume-2-the-duffer-brothers-interview-1236458696\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-volume-2-the-duffer-brothers-interview-1236458696\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">added Matt Duffer.<\/a> \u201cBut ultimately, and we have said this before, but I guess to reiterate, [the live-action spinoff] is an entirely new mythology. This spinoff does connect and will answer some of the lingering questions. It\u2019s not specifically about the Mind Flayer or the Upside Down, but hopefully it provides some answers to at least those lingering questions related to Henry\u2019s memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRoss Duffer had previously told THR that he and his brother were \u201cvery early days\u201d on the live-action spinoff. Once again, confirming \u201cthis is the end of the story for these characters of Hawkins, for the Upside Down\u201d and that the spinoff will be in \u201ca different decade and different characters, but of course, still connected to the\u00a0Stranger Things\u00a0universe. It\u2019s an idea we\u2019ve had for years and something we\u2019re just really excited and passionate about. We won\u2019t be showrunning that show, but we\u2019ll be heavily involved. So, as the new year comes around, we\u2019re going to start spending more time on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFirst up in the Stranger Things universe will be the animated spinoff for Netflix, called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/stranger-things-tales-from-85-animated-series-netflix-1236420138\/\">Stranger Things: Tales From \u201985<\/a>, coming in 2026 (with a premiere date yet to be announced). The series takes place between season two and three of Stranger Things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tExecutive producer Shawn Levy, who has been intricately involved in both the flagship and the animated series, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-ending-tales-from-85-starfighter-shawn-levy-1236464799\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-ending-tales-from-85-starfighter-shawn-levy-1236464799\/\">teased the following to THR<\/a> about the animated series: \u201cYou\u2019re not getting a watered-down continuation of the show you\u2019ve watched and loved. You\u2019re getting a different tone, a different visual style. It\u2019s filling in blanks of mythology and timeline that you\u2019ve never gotten in what we call \u2018the mothership,\u2019 the original show. The Duffers loved a certain style of \u201880s and \u201890s all-family audience animation and cartoons, and this show is made in the spirit of that. So it\u2019s not \u2018Stranger Things, but animated,\u2019 it\u2019s very much its own tone and style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEric Robles is showruning the animated show from Flying Bark Productions.\u00a0Stranger Things\u00a0creators Matt and Ross Duffer, along with Hilary Leavitt, via Upside Down Pictures; Levy via 21 Laps; Dan Cohen will exec produce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe voice cast includes Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max, Luca Diaz as Mike, Ej (Elisha) Williams as Lucas, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Ben Plessala as Will and Brett Gipson as Hopper. Additional voice castmembers include Odessa A\u2019zion, Janeane Garofalo and Lou Diamond Phillips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe idea was kind of to evoke a feeling of an \u201980s cartoon,\u201d Matt Duffer <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-ending-tales-from-85-starfighter-shawn-levy-1236464799\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-ending-tales-from-85-starfighter-shawn-levy-1236464799\/\">said in the announcement.<\/a> \u201cWhat we\u2019ve been able to capture is the magic of Hawkins in a new way,\u201d Robles added of the series. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMeanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-vecna-death-jamie-campbell-bower-interview-1236463554\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/stranger-things-vecna-death-jamie-campbell-bower-interview-1236463554\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Henry Creel-focused<\/a> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/netflix-stranger-things-broadway-1236197127\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/netflix-stranger-things-broadway-1236197127\/\">Stranger Things: The First Shadow<\/a>\u00a0continues to run on\u00a0Broadway, with no closing date yet announced.
