{"id":395205,"date":"2026-01-08T13:20:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T13:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/395205\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T13:20:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T13:20:09","slug":"one-gut-microbe-blocks-weight-gain-in-mice-on-a-high-fat-diet-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/395205\/","title":{"rendered":"One Gut Microbe Blocks Weight Gain in Mice on a High-Fat Diet : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Among the diverse community of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that call the human gut home, scientists have identified a bacterial species that can single-handedly and significantly reduce weight gain.<\/p>\n<p>In a new <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.cmet.2025.10.007\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> led by microbiologists from the University of Utah, the gut bacteria species <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turicibacter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Turicibacter<\/a> was singled out for reducing weight gain and improving metabolic health in mice fed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/eating-a-high-fat-diet-may-increase-your-anxiety-study-warns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high-fat diet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t think one microbe would have such a dramatic effect \u2013 I thought it would be a mix of three or four,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/healthcare.utah.edu\/newsroom\/news\/2025\/12\/gut-bacteria-put-brakes-weight-gain-mice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> June Round, a microbiologist from the University of Utah.<\/p>\n<p>Supplements of the molecules produced by Turicibacter could eventually help to reduce the health effects of obesity in humans.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/tiny-molecule-made-by-gut-bacteria-could-cut-type-2-diabetes-risk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiny Molecule Made by Gut Bacteria Could Cut Type 2 Diabetes Risk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Obesity can lead to various metabolic diseases like type 2  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/diabetes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73018\" data-postid=\"187737\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">diabetes<\/a>, which affects <a href=\"https:\/\/idf.org\/about-diabetes\/diabetes-facts-figures\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">millions of people worldwide<\/a>. The gut microbiome exerts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-how-some-gut-microbiomes-could-be-promoting-obesity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">profound effects<\/a> on metabolic health and obesity \u2013 yet it&#8217;s a two-way street, as this microbiome is continuously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/yo-yo-dieting-may-trigger-long-lasting-changes-in-gut-bacteria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shaped by one&#8217;s diet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nature12506\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous studies<\/a> have linked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/gastric-bypass-surgery-gives-patients-a-new-set-of-helpful-microbes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low microbiome diversity<\/a> to obesity. (Klag et al., Cell Metab., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Enter Turicibacter, one part of a metabolically protective community of microbes that includes at least 80 bacterial species, present in the microbiome milieu at a relative abundance of around 0.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Turicibacter produces a suite of fatty acids that keep other, more detrimental fat molecules in check. These detrimental fatty molecules are called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ceramide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ceramides<\/a>: they increase as a result of a high-fat diet and are associated with metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/huge-study-links-99-of-heart-attacks-and-strokes-with-four-risk-factors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it appears that the fatty acids produced by Turicibacter confer numerous metabolic advantages by affecting how fat is absorbed in the small intestine.<\/p>\n<p>So, could Turicibacter allow one to gorge themselves on chocolate cake and remain relatively lean? Alas, no, because Turicibacter populations fluctuate with diet \u2013 too much fat in its environment stifles the growth of this beneficial bacterium.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/turicbacter-table.jpg\" alt=\"Researchers Discovered a Gut Microbe That Can Singlehandedly Halt Weight Gain in Mice\" width=\"642\" height=\"416\" class=\"wp-image-187739 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Turicibacter supplementation brings about multiple favorable metabolic changes even when mice are fed a high-fat diet. (Klag et al., Cell Metab., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>In one experiment, Turicibacter growth was halted by the presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palmitic_acid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">palmitate<\/a>, a major saturated fat component that&#8217;s common in high-fat diets. Interestingly, this fat component did not kill the Turicibacter bacteria, which resumed their growth cycle once removed from the palmitate-laced environment.<\/p>\n<p>Since Turicibacter protects against the detriments of high-fat diets but is also depleted by them, Turicibacter levels must be topped off through regular supplementation.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, when mice were given an oral Turicibacter supplement five days a week, they displayed less weight gain, lower resting glucose levels, reduced body fat, and other favorable changes in lipid profiles, even while still fed a diet high in fat.<\/p>\n<p>These findings are medically exciting, but further study is warranted to see if they apply to humans. It&#8217;s a complex, ever-evolving avenue for future therapies because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/an-extra-sense-may-connect-gut-bacteria-with-our-brain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gut microbe<\/a> research remains an &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/more-than-99-percent-of-the-microbes-inside-us-are-unknown-to-science\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iceberg<\/a>&#8216;, of which only a small portion has been revealed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767618732_248_Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new work adds to a growing body of research into the connection between metabolic health and the gut microbiome. In one <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nature05414\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earlier study<\/a>, gut microbes from obese mice were transferred into lean mice with no gut microbiome of their own \u2013 and those formerly lean mice gained weight.<\/p>\n<p>In another, perhaps counterintuitive <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.0605374104\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>, mice that had all their gut bacteria wiped out were protected from gaining as much weight while on a fatty diet, compared to those with normal microbiomes. That suggests that certain microbial mixes are linked to weight gain and increases in body fat.<\/p>\n<p>Turicibacter is likely to be just one of many allies.
