It&#8217;s also just 20,000 light-years away; not super-close, but close enough that, with today&#8217;s instruments, its changes can be tracked in exquisite detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Those changes are fascinating, thanks in part to the kind of explosion that created the cloud \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/rare-star-doomed-explode-finally-033046316.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Type Ia supernova;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Type Ia supernova<\/a>. These occur when a white dwarf star in a binary system accretes so much mass from its companion that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chandrasekhar_limit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:it is no longer stable;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">it is no longer stable<\/a>, resulting in a cosmic kaboom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Type Ia supernovae are important for a number of reasons. When they do explode, they have an absolute brightness peak, which is well known. This means that we can measure the distance to them with high accuracy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-can-t-figure-out-how-fast-the-universe-is-expanding-here-s-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:use them as distance gauges;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">use them as distance gauges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They&#8217;re also a major source of heavy elements in the Universe; when a white dwarf explodes, the products of its core fusion spray out into space, where they can be absorbed into other objects as they form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Supernova explosions and the elements they hurl into space are the lifeblood of new stars and planets,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/chandra.si.edu\/press\/26_releases\/press_010626.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Williams says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Williams says<\/a>. &#8220;Understanding exactly how they behave is crucial to knowing our cosmic history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Kepler&#8217;s supernova remnant is an important laboratory for understanding this process, so astronomers have watched it closely for decades. And it&#8217;s moving fast enough that minute changes can be tracked even from 20,000 light-years away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/after-400-years-debris-from-this-supernova-is-still-not-slowing-down\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:previous 2020 study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">previous 2020 study<\/a> found that some of the knots in the expanding cloud of star guts have velocities up to 8,700 kilometers per second (around 5,400 miles per second).<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/41e99e2aab48d206d35bd401330a9ca6.jpeg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to ScienceAlert&#8217;s free fact-checked newsletter<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The video contains snapshots of the supernova remnant recorded in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2014, and 2025. Although a paper is yet to be published, the researchers plan to focus on measurements of motion in the ejecta, building on the results of <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/ac4240\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a 2022 paper;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a 2022 paper<\/a> that mapped the speeds of the ejecta shock fronts in several places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The visualization analysis shows other parts of the shock moving at speeds between 6,170 and 1,790 kilometers per second \u2013 about 2 and 0.5 percent of the speed of light, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although that&#8217;s faster than the Milky Way&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-detect-fastest-runaway-star-ever-seen-in-the-milky-way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:escape velocity for a star;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">escape velocity for a star<\/a>, the front is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.287.5450.112\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:expanding into gas;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">expanding into gas<\/a> and dust <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/mnras\/stz1749\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:that will slow its momentum;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">that will slow its momentum<\/a> significantly. It will ultimately remain bound to the galaxy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Eventually, over thousands of years, the debris from the supernova will dissipate.
