{"id":397301,"date":"2026-01-09T13:46:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T13:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/397301\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T13:46:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T13:46:10","slug":"new-breakthrough-to-restore-aging-joints-could-help-treat-osteoarthritis-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/397301\/","title":{"rendered":"New Breakthrough to Restore Aging Joints Could Help Treat Osteoarthritis : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study in mice by researchers from Stanford University has traced the loss of cartilage that comes with aging to a single protein, pointing to treatments that may one day restore mobility and ease discomfort in seniors.<\/p>\n<p>The protein 15-PGDH has previously been <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/d41573-025-00209-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extensively linked to aging<\/a>: it becomes more abundant as we get older, and interferes with the molecules that repair tissue and reduce inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>That led scientists to consider whether 15-PGDH might be involved in osteoarthritis, where stress on joints leads to the breakdown <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collagen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of collagen<\/a> in cartilage, causing inflammation and pain.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/arthritis-affects-thousands-of-kids-and-one-piece-of-advice-is-crucial\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arthritis Affects Thousands of Kids, And One Piece of Advice Is Crucial<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In tests on old mice, knee cartilage that had previously worn down thickened following the introduction of a 15-PGDH inhibitor. In similar tests on young, injured mice, the inhibitor offered protection against the usual effects of injury-induced osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<p>When the researchers triggered the equivalent of an anterior cruciate ligament injury in mice and subsequently applied the treatment, osteoarthritis didn&#8217;t develop, as would normally be expected in these kinds of mouse models.<\/p>\n<p>Previous attempts at cartilage regeneration included the use of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stem-cells\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73034\" data-postid=\"187978\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">stem cells<\/a>, a factor that was no longer necessary when 15-PGDH was inhibited. Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chondrocyte\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the chondrocyte cells<\/a> that make and maintain cartilage were being transformed into a healthier, more useful state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a new way of regenerating adult tissue, and it has significant clinical promise for treating arthritis due to aging or injury,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/stories\/2025\/11\/joint-cartilage-aging-osteoarthritis-therapy-research\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> microbiologist Helen Blau. &#8220;We were looking for stem cells, but they are clearly not involved. (Singla et al., Science, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Treated mice had a steadier gait, suggesting they were experiencing less pain, and were shown putting more weight on their injured legs \u2013 signs that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/humans-have-a-hidden-salamander-like-ability-to-regenerate-body-tissue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cartilage restoration<\/a> equated improved physical health.<\/p>\n<p>The same experiment was also tried on human tissue samples taken from people having knee replacement surgery. Again, there were clear signs of regeneration, with the cartilage getting stiffer and showing fewer signs of inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The mechanism is quite striking and really shifted our perspective about how tissue regeneration can occur,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/stories\/2025\/11\/joint-cartilage-aging-osteoarthritis-therapy-research\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> orthopaedic scientist Nidhi Bhutani. &#8220;It&#8217;s clear that a large pool of already existing cells in cartilage are changing their gene expression patterns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And by targeting these cells for regeneration, we may have an opportunity to have a bigger overall impact clinically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767618732_248_Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While there&#8217;s still plenty of work to do, this could eventually lead to effective treatments to roll back the damage done by arthritis or aging in general. We could be heading towards a future where hip and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/there-s-now-an-artificial-cartilage-gel-that-s-strong-enough-to-work-on-knees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">knee replacements<\/a> are no longer needed.<\/p>\n<p>Besides replacing the joints affected, current treatment options for osteoarthritis are limited to pain management.
