{"id":397626,"date":"2026-01-09T17:47:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T17:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/397626\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T17:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T17:47:12","slug":"argentina-repays-us-emergency-loan-boosting-trumps-economic-strategy-in-latin-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/397626\/","title":{"rendered":"Argentina repays US emergency loan, boosting Trump\u2019s economic strategy in Latin America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Friday that Argentina has fully repaid an emergency currency loan that generated \u201ctens of millions\u201d in profit for American taxpayers while stabilising a key regional ally.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In a social media post, Bessent praised Argentinian President Javier Milei\u2019s economic reforms and said the successful intervention demonstrated that US President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cPeace Through Economic Strength\u201d policy was at work in Latin America.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Argentina faced a severe liquidity crisis in October with the value of the Argentine peso plummeting as investors lost faith in the economy.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This prompted the United States to provide emergency dollar funding through a currency swap from the Treasury\u2019s Exchange Stabilisation Fund that effectively propped up the value of the peso, averting a financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cArgentina has successfully re-accessed financial markets and has made encouraging changes to its monetary and exchange rate policy framework,\u201d Bessent wrote.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The Treasury no longer holds any Argentine pesos, he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent speaks in the Oval Office in December 2025.
