Zheng Qinwen<\/a> will miss the Australian Open<\/a> as she continues her recovery from a right elbow injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking this decision has been incredibly difficult for me,\u201d the 2024 finalist said Thursday on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelbourne is my \u2018lucky place,\u2019 where I won my first Grand Slam main draw match and had my best experience \u2026 Although my recovery is progressing well and my offseason has gone smoothly, to play a Grand Slam requires players to maintain an extreme competitive condition. Currently, I have not yet reached my best condition that I have set for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zheng played just 32 matches in 2025 due to the injury to her playing arm. She had arthroscopic surgery last July, after a first-round loss at Wimbledon, and did not play again until September at the China Open in Beijing.<\/p>\n

After retiring from her second match of the tournament, against Czechia\u2019s Linda Noskov\u00e1, she said in a news conference that she decided \u201cto play this match to assess how much recovery is needed in my elbow.\u201d It was her last match of the year.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old\u2019s run to the 2024 final in Melbourne, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka<\/a>, was the start of the year that propelled her to tennis stardom. She won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics<\/a> at Roland Garros, beating overwhelming favorite Iga \u015awi\u0105tek<\/a> in the semifinals, and reached four more finals, including at the season-ending WTA Tour Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
