Welcome to the Golfweek’s Best 2026 ranking of the top 200 resort courses in the United States. Our hundreds of course raters have been busy, especially with checking out new courses that have earned a spot on this prestigious list.<\/p>\n
Ambitious resort developers have been busy in recent years after a long slowdown in the introduction of new courses. Layouts such as the Lido and Sedge Valley at Sand Valley in Wisconsin, Pinehurst No. 10 in North Carolina, and the Karoo and Roost layouts at Cabot Citrus Farms in Florida have in recent years popped into the rankings of top resort courses in the U.S.<\/p>\n
This year is no different, with a handful of new courses making the Golfweek\u2019s Best ranking of resort courses. Tops among them is The Keep at The McLemore, a Bill Bergin and Rees Jones design perched high atop Lookout Mountain in Georgia. The new layout joins the property\u2019s established Highlands course among the top 200 resort layouts in the U.S., with The Keep jumping into the No. 25 spot since opening in 2025. The views from the cliffside holes are staggering, with a valley floor some 1,500 feet below and mountains all around.<\/p>\n
Also new for this year\u2019s rankings is the Tom Fazio-designed layout at High Hampton Resort in North Carolina. The high-country course, which opened in 2021, has surpassed the minimum number of rater votes to break into the rankings of top resort courses at No. 45. The success of High Hampton extends Fazio\u2019s run of excellence, this course raising his total to 23 layouts in the resort rankings.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s even room for an older course finding new life and a spot in this year\u2019s rankings. The North Course at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in California breaks into the rankings at No. 56 after the original 1965 design was overhauled by the team of Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner.<\/p>\n
There also is a can\u2019t-miss course leaping into the rankings in a tie for No. 73: The Scarecrow at Gamble Sands by David McLay Kidd and Nick Schaan. The second course at the popular Washington resort is perched atop cliffs and ridges overlooking the Columbia River, and it serves as a twist on the original Gamble Sands layout with more risk-reward opportunities and even better views. Expect to see the brand-new Scarecrow climb in the rankings in the coming years.<\/p>\n
To compile this list, the members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on our 10 criteria. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings on each course are averaged to produce a final, cumulative rating. Then each course is ranked against other courses in the category. This list focuses on the courses themselves, not the resorts as a whole or other amenities.<\/p>\n
