{"id":398329,"date":"2026-01-10T01:39:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/398329\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T01:39:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:39:15","slug":"detective-solves-1973-cold-case-involving-16-year-old-who-vanished-while-walking-with-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/398329\/","title":{"rendered":"Detective solves 1973 cold case involving 16-year-old who vanished while walking with friends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">DALLAS (Gray News) &#8211; The oldest missing persons case in Texas has finally been solved 52 years later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">It was back on January 14, 1973, when 16-year-old Norman Prater was reported missing to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/3815692185231952\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/3815692185231952\"> Dallas Police Department.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Authorities in Texas have solved a missing persons cold case more than 50 years after the...\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4N5IGF5HOBDVXJR2QL4QHTOK2A.png\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/>Authorities in Texas have solved a missing persons cold case more than 50 years after the individual was last seen with friends in East Dallas.(Source: National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The 16-year-old was last seen walking with his friends. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officials believed they made a breakthrough in July 1973 after an \u201cunidentified white man was killed in a hit-and-run incident\u201d on Highway 35 in the city of Rockport. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">However, they ultimately decided that the two cases were unrelated, though the body of that victim remained unidentified for 52 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Aransas County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office discovered a new photo of the unidentified body and passed it on to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in late 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">That crucial piece of evidence ended up on Detective Ryan Dalby\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Dalby eventually established a connection between the unidentified hit-and-run victim and Prater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Prater\u2019s older brother in Lewisville was contacted and shown the photo.
