\n\t\u201cKPop Demon Hunters<\/a>\u201d screenwriters Danya Jimenez<\/a> and Hannah McMechan<\/a> are taking on some massive new IP \u2014 signing on to script Tim Burton<\/a>\u2018s reimagining of the classic \u201c.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWarner Bros. Pictures tapped the writing duo to write the screenplay for the film, news of which broke in 2024<\/a>. Burton is attached to direct the update to the 1958 science-fiction horror movie, which follows a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after an alien encounter and exacts revenge on her cheating husband. The \u201cBeetlejuice\u201d and \u201cNightmare Before Christmas\u201d filmmaker is also producing the film alongside Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. Gillian Flynn penned an earlier version of the script.<\/p>\n

\n\tLuckyChap<\/a> \u2014 the production company led by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara \u2014 is on board to produce and develop; Morgan Begg, the company\u2019s director of development, is overseeing the project. Kai Dolbashian serves as executive producer.<\/p>\n

\n\tJimenez and McMechan were named to Variety\u2019s 10 Screenwriters to Watch<\/a> for 2025 after penning the megahit animated movie, Sony Animation and Netflix\u2019s \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d alongside co-director Maggie Kang. The screenwriting duo met while attending Loyola Marymount University; then, they got a script into the Sundance Feature Lab, where fellow screenwriter Nicole Perlman approached them with an idea that became \u201cKPop Demon Hunters.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe started writing that in 2020 during the pandemic,\u201d Jimenez told Variety <\/a>last year. \u201cAt first, we were like, \u2018This is going to be the biggest movie ever, and then as time passed, we were like, \u2018Maybe it won\u2019t get made. Who knows?\u2019 And then we were on set this summer and the trailer dropped and we were shocked. You don\u2019t really expect anything from this career. You\u2019re just grateful to get paid and if something happens with it, that\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAdded McMechan: \u201cThis was truly the first time where there was all this manpower behind it, and it felt like it was on track to being made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSince the release of \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d last summer, it has become a worldwide phenomenon, becoming Netflix\u2019s most-watched film of all time, while its songs broke records on Billboard 200. The movie is nominated for three awards at this year\u2019s Golden Gobes including best animated motion picture, best original song and cinematic and box office achievement.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hollywood Reporter broke news of Jimenez and McMechan boarding the project. <\/p>\n
