But who knew that books could kill?<\/p>\n<p>That is the premise of \u201cIf Books Could Kill\u201d, an exhibit at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, in the US state of Maryland, that looks at four toxic pigments used for millennia and around the world to illustrate and bind books: mercury, <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/health-environment\/article\/3312120\/thai-river-turns-orange-dangerous-toxins-myanmar-mines-flush-downstream?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arsenic<\/a>, lead and the bright-yellow mineral known as \u201corpiment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The exhibit, open since December, ends on August 3.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">These metals and minerals produced jewel-like, dazzling colours \u2013 a brilliant green, a reddish-orange, a bright golden yellow. Lead is the basis for a colour known as \u201clead white\u201d, an opaque, silky pigment that retains its bright hue for centuries.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Some of these tints were so seductive and beguiling that death could be seen as almost worth the risk. They remained in circulation for hundreds of years after their dangerousness was documented.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the colour \u201cParis green\u201d, introduced in 1814 and a favourite of artists like <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/arts-culture\/article\/3291630\/monet-water-lilies-sale-chinese-social-media-app-goes-viral-gallery-silent-details?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Claude Monet<\/a>, <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/hong-kong-economy\/article\/3279812\/van-gogh-painting-owned-princess-may-fetch-us50-million-hong-kong-auction-setting-record?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vincent van Gogh<\/a> and Mary Cassatt, contains arsenic.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cIt was completely different from all the other green pigments, and people went crazy for it,\u201d said Annette Ortiz Miranda, a conservation scientist for the museum who co-curated the exhibit with Walters staff Lynley Anne Herbert and Abigail Quandt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
