While presenting the best director award at the Golden Globes, Judd Apatow revealed his 10-year \u201cquiet boycott\u201d of the awards ceremony ever since losing the best comedy movie award in 2016.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is very surprising that I am here, because I\u2019ve been boycotting the ceremony for about 10 years. A very quiet boycott, no one seems to have noticed,\u201d Apatow quipped. \u201cWe\u2019ve had beef ever since my film \u2018Trainwreck\u2019 lost best comedy to Ridley Scott\u2019s \u2018The Martian.’\u201d<\/p>\n

As the audience laughed, Apatow dug deeper: \u201cYou know, Ridley Scott, America\u2019s favorite comedy director. Director of such hilarious comedies as \u2018Gladiator,\u2019 \u2018Blade Runner\u2019 and \u2018Alien.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t wait until later tonight when best comedy is won by \u2018Hamnet,’\u201d he added, referencing the best drama contender about William Shakespeare grieving the loss of his child.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut that\u2019s water under the bridge. A lot has happened since then. That was 10 years ago,\u201d Apatow went on. \u201cSince then we\u2019ve had COVID. I believe we\u2019re a dictatorship now. I\u2019m still pretty focused on this \u2018The Martian\u2019 thing, I\u2019ve got to be honest with you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before naming the nominees for best director, Apatow said, \u201cAs an example to inspire America, I\u2019m going to squash that beef and start the healing right now.\u201d He ended up handing the award to Paul Thomas Anderson, who won for \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/p>\n
The question of what qualifies as a comedy versus a drama is a long-running debate in Hollywood awards season. Take \u201cThe Bear,\u201d for example, an intense portrayal of grief and ambition in the culinary world, which has competed (and won) against sunny sitcoms like \u201cAbbott Elementary.\u201d<\/p>\n
Apatow has personally received one Golden Globe nomination, for being a co-writer on the original song \u201cWalk Hard\u201d from \u201cWalk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.\u201d<\/p>\n
