Americans favor the filing of criminal charges against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross for the killing of Renee Nicole Good \u2014 with a whopping 23-point spread between \u201cyes\u201d and \u201cno\u201d responses.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday of last week, Ross shot and killed<\/a>\u00a0Good in Minneapolis during a hotly disputed incident that was caught on camera.<\/p>\n Trump Department of Homeland Security Secretary\u00a0Kristi Noem\u00a0rushed to label the 37-year-old Good a \u201cdomestic terrorist\u201d whose killing was justified, and Trump\u00a0himself\u00a0attacked the woman<\/a>.<\/p>\n But\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0police statements<\/a>\u00a0contradicted their version of events.<\/p>\n Days after the shooting, Americans disagreed with Trump and Noem by almost two-to-one. Respondents to a YouGov poll<\/a> taken between January 9 and January 11th uniformly showed opposition to ICE on every question.<\/p>\n Americans were asked, \u201cDo you think the ICE agent should face criminal charges for shooting the woman in Minneapolis?\u201d<\/p>\n Fifty-three percent answered \u201cyes\u201d versus just 30 percent \u201cno\u201d \u2014 including 54% to 23% among independents \u2014 with the remainder responding \u201cnot sure.\u201d<\/p>\n There was a similar spread when participants were asked \u201cDo you think the ICE agent was justified or not justified in the amount of force he used in shooting the woman in Minneapolis?\u201d<\/p>\n On that question, 53% said \u201cno,\u201d Ross wasn\u2019t justified, to just 28% \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n Elsewhere in the poll, a stunning 61% said ICE \u201coften\u201d or \u201csometimes\u201d arrests immigrants \u201cwho are authorized to live in the U.S. and have not committed immigration or customs violations.\u201d<\/p>\n And similarly, 60% said that Trump\u2019s ICE agents use \u201cunnecessary physical force against U.S. citizens who have not committed immigration or customs violations.\u201d<\/p>\n The survey also showed that ICE now has a net favorability rating of minus-12, compared to a plus-16 net favorability in February<\/a> just weeks after Trump was sworn in.
