The <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c781e7c6-2c5b-beaf-55b8-999c76f76661\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/stl\/st-louis-cardinals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> have been busy in their own right, too, dealing away veterans as they enter a new chapter.<\/p>\n<p>On the other, the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4750d73d-d92e-b390-758c-2c7b44a810db\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/mil\/milwaukee-brewers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"04b65a0b-3cca-d795-0e21-23606470418a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/cin\/cincinnati-reds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cincinnati Reds<\/a> have been very quiet coming off of playoff berths a season ago.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at each team&#8217;s offseason activity and what might come next. Additionally, we&#8217;ve assigned each team an urgency rating &#8212; from one to five, based on how much each still needs to accomplish before reporting to camp:<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8212; Their work is (basically) done.<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8212; They&#8217;re having a strong winter, but more would help.<\/p>\n<p>3 &#8212; We&#8217;ll judge their winter on where it goes from here.<\/p>\n<p>4 &#8212; We&#8217;re waaaaaiting &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>5 &#8212; It has been a disaster. Can they turn it around?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/chc.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/>Chicago Cubs<\/p>\n<p>Key additions<\/p>\n<p>3B <a data-player-guid=\"b28542aa-30be-6851-75c4-501226976e1c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34886\/alex-bregman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Bregman<\/a><br \/>RHP <a data-player-guid=\"de267d58-fbaf-a33a-4842-526ae031aec5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/40944\/edward-cabrera\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Cabrera<\/a><br \/>RHP Phil Maton<br \/>RHP <a data-player-guid=\"95b8dc9c-8746-5209-36ce-a4eacaca7c2c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33191\/hunter-harvey\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hunter Harvey<\/a><br \/>LHP <a data-player-guid=\"f04fe81b-11df-08c2-17ba-2babffc30528\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/36088\/hoby-milner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hoby Milner<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they&#8217;ve accomplished so far: The Cubs have completely rebuilt their bullpen after saying goodbye to 2025 stalwarts <a data-player-guid=\"5a308ffb-db14-fdfe-ffa0-76ae20567ae1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35292\/brad-keller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brad Keller<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"3632a019-d14b-a5e9-fd85-e8ad7abdb1fa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/31010\/drew-pomeranz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drew Pomeranz<\/a>, adding Maton, Hunter and Milner. But their biggest addition comes at third base, where Bregman takes over for <a data-player-guid=\"13a9edb7-04d4-3c62-85d7-8fcc41b9104b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4867667\/matt-shaw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Shaw<\/a>. Shaw showed promise in the second half as a rookie, but he&#8217;s not Bregman, who brings leadership and championship experience to the mix to go along with his hitting prowess. By adding Cabrera, the Cubs&#8217; rotation is as deep as it&#8217;s been in several years, giving hope to a seven-month season. They ran out of arms last October.<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: With Bregman in the mix, the Cubs have a surplus in the infield. Do they keep everyone or make a trade? Second baseman <a data-player-guid=\"b21d3016-6ad6-93a3-cb4a-24b46fa4f601\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41219\/nico-hoerner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nico Hoerner<\/a> is a free agent next year but moving him would hamper the team&#8217;s chances of winning, no matter where else they strengthen the roster &#8212; Hoerner was that valuable to the team last season. And with <a data-player-guid=\"b963b85d-6db2-f0e5-b763-88d4a41c0d73\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34967\/kyle-tucker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Tucker<\/a> moving on and prospect <a data-player-guid=\"ca738145-8b74-34f5-a475-3d0e62eaa3d4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4917685\/owen-caissie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Owen Caissie<\/a> traded for Cabrera, is right field <a data-player-guid=\"c8f56866-3f5a-304f-9961-10d6b8970628\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4142424\/seiya-suzuki\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seiya Suzuki<\/a>&#8216;s domain again?<\/p>\n<p>Urgency Rating: 1<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cin.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/>Cincinnati Reds<\/p>\n<p>Key additions<\/p>\n<p>None<\/p>\n<p>Bold MLB predictions for 2026<img decoding=\"async\" data-lazyload=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/r1594731_608x342_16-9.jpg\" class=\"round lazyload\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The world champion Orioles? Here&#8217;s how the year ahead could play out.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47445503\/mlb-2026-predictions-bold-picks-orioles-mariners-world-series-wbc-tucker-skubal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bold MLB predictions for 2026 \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they&#8217;ve accomplished so far: Cincinnati has rebuilt its bullpen to some extent, re-signing <a data-player-guid=\"5141b9cb-187f-c953-898a-ff8b818224ed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33403\/emilio-pagan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emilio Pagan<\/a> while adding <a data-player-guid=\"db889ea6-8667-f73d-e2fa-31256c774ba0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32777\/pierce-johnson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pierce Johnson<\/a> and Caleb Freguson to their mix. Outside of that, it&#8217;s been a relatively quiet offseason after an early dalliance with then-free agent <a data-player-guid=\"657f83eb-5046-ab51-fc42-003dd9c43710\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33712\/kyle-schwarber\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Schwarber<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: Beef up their offense. It&#8217;s no secret Cincinnati was deficient at the plate a lot of the time in 2025, but it has yet to make a significant upgrade there. There&#8217;s still time as the Reds continue to explore both free agency and trades. Dangling one of their starters &#8212; they are deep there &#8212; is one way to go. A reunion with <a data-player-guid=\"1a1ec65f-a81f-8ce9-9f38-7275b93a2474\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32367\/eugenio-suarez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eugenio Suarez<\/a> a nice fit as well &#8211; just not at third base where the team got better defensively last season when it traded for <a data-player-guid=\"9bc31ab9-6e54-8b62-8a44-28e06b260e1a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35020\/kebryan-hayes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ke&#8217;Bryan Hayes<\/a>. Completing their work in the pen is also a must-do before spring training.<\/p>\n<p>Urgency Rating: 4<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/mil.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/>Milwaukee Brewers<\/p>\n<p>Key additions<\/p>\n<p>LHP <a data-player-guid=\"f0f5ec27-997d-3bf9-803c-277ae80e1a96\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4705673\/angel-zerpa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angel Zerpa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they&#8217;ve accomplished so far: The best team in baseball last regular season once again isn&#8217;t making many offseason headlines. The Brewers aren&#8217;t major players in free agency these days, but retaining a fully healthy <a data-player-guid=\"b43aedac-ed9c-2317-d1b9-138512ae4818\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/37515\/brandon-woodruff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Woodruff<\/a> via the qualifying offer might be viewed as a major addition in its own way. The team also thought enough of Zerpa to trade a 2025 Rookie of the Year candidate (<a data-player-guid=\"4e51a42f-b7ac-38eb-85c1-26608310bade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/42959\/isaac-collins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Isaac Collins<\/a>) for him. Keep an eye on his progression &#8212; as a starter or reliever &#8212; while considering how well Milwaukee has done with pitching acquisitions over the years.<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: The one major task for Brewers brass before spring training is figuring out what to do with ace <a data-player-guid=\"aa1cac72-2915-387f-9e32-4b2f84f52b1d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39825\/freddy-peralta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Freddy Peralta<\/a>, whose salary this year is just $8 million. Odds are he will be moved to maximize his value before he hits free agency after the season. It&#8217;s simply how Milwaukee operates &#8212; always thinking one step ahead to keep its prospect train full while still trying to compete. The Brewers have mastered it. We rank the best by birth year.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47526221\/mlb-2026-ranking-baseball-best-players-prospects-age-16-25-bobby-witt-jr-paul-skenes-roman-anthony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kiley McDaniel \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they&#8217;ve accomplished so far: Pittsburgh set out to improve its offense, and the Pirates have done that via trades and the free agent signing of O&#8217;Hearn. It doesn&#8217;t mean they&#8217;ll be a juggernaut at the plate, but they&#8217;ll be better than last season. That&#8217;s a start. Lowe and O&#8217;Hearn also bring experience playing for playoff-caliber teams, a much-needed benefit for the Pirates.<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: The Pirates aren&#8217;t done looking for offense, which could come in the form of an outfield bat or an addition to the left side of the infield. Or both. And after trading from their pitching depth, moving <a data-player-guid=\"8799ad0c-f467-4c4e-776e-bc15658b4552\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41405\/johan-oviedo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johan Oviedo<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"f3b25d20-2c07-396f-83f5-dfc859f24c58\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4918155\/mike-burrows\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Burrows<\/a> in separate deals, they would like to refill that part of their roster, too.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s already been as active an offseason the Pirates have had in recent memory as they try to build around ace <a data-player-guid=\"cdfd69c1-1b9b-30fe-acf4-aad457b0850e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4719507\/paul-skenes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Skenes<\/a>. Getting all three players to waive their no-trade clauses was an accomplishment in and of itself, and has helped move the team&#8217;s retool along.<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: Deciding where to trade popular second baseman <a data-player-guid=\"593a86dc-040d-4d07-7086-b3c4323d9a89\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41773\/brendan-donovan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brendan Donovan<\/a> is one of the bigger tasks left for Bloom, who wants to continue adding young talent to the organization.
