{"id":407371,"date":"2026-01-14T21:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T21:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/407371\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T21:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T21:11:10","slug":"liv-golf-ceo-holds-no-ill-will-toward-brooks-koepka-for-his-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/407371\/","title":{"rendered":"LIV Golf CEO Holds No Ill Will Toward Brooks Koepka for His Exit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5g\">WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. \u2014 The head of the LIV Golf League said Wednesday that he\u2019d have done the same thing the PGA Tour is doing now: finding a fast pathway back for Brooks Koepka.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5j\">Scott O\u2019Neil, the CEO of LIV Golf, joined a leadership panel at a preseason LIV media event at the Palm Beach Convention Center, and Koepka was understandably one of the topics of conversation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5m\">Last month, the five-time major champion announced along with LIV Golf that he was leaving the league \u201camicably\u201d after four years. The PGA Tour on Monday said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/brooks-koepka-will-return-pga-tour-this-month\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Koepka had been reinstated, with penalties<\/a>, and will make his return in two weeks at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5s\">\u201cI believe in free agency,\u201d O\u2019Neil said during a news conference. \u201cCall me old-fashioned. I believe in open pathways. I believe people should be where they want to be. I believe our 57 players should be able to play PGA Tour events. We are not restrictive. That\u2019s what we\u2019ve believed since day one.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5v\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had some friction with the DP World Tour and it\u2019s been costly to us [due to fines]. But we encourage them to play DP World Tour events.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5y\">\u201cI don\u2019t think this is where he [Koepka] wanted to be. He talked about some of the challenges in public. I want people in the room who are going to wrap their arms around us. This is not a holy war. At least not from our side. I root for Brooks. I\u2019m hoping for the best for him and his family if this is what he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"61\">O\u2019Neil said he was not surprised that the PGA Tour has reinstated Koepka: \u201cI think I\u2019d have done the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"64\">The PGA Tour prohibits players from competing in LIV Golf events, deeming them unauthorized. It announced Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/brooks-koepka-pga-tour-return-raises-questions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a narrow \u201cReturning Member Program\u201d<\/a> that only applies to players on LIV who won majors between 2022 and 2025. That means that only Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Cam Smith were eligible.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"67\">The three LIV captains have been at the LIV function this week and understandably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/bryson-dechambeau-not-surprised-offered-path-back-pga-tour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pledged their support for the league<\/a>. Only DeChambeau\u2019s contract status is known: he is on board through this year and is a strong negotiating position as the league\u2019s most popular player.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6a\">Koepka joined LIV Golf in time for the second event in 2022 and has said that he feared his career was on the downside at the time due to several injuries. But he won late that year and in 2023 won the PGA Championship, which makes him exempt on the PGA Tour through 2028.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">He also became the first LIV player to win five times on the circuit.<\/p>\n<p>Koepka\u2019s financial penalty for leaving LIV Golf will remain private<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">Koepka had a year to go on his contract and O\u2019Neil would not say if there was any financial penalty for leaving.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">\u201cLegally I can\u2019t say and I don\u2019t know if I would if I could,\u201d he said. \u201cWe agreed we\u2019d not discuss the separation terms publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6p\">Koepka, who has four PGA Tour victories in addition to his five major wins, likely made in excess of $150 million in upfront money, prize money and bonuses playing for LIV Golf.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">As part of the terms to coming back to the PGA Tour, he is required to pay a $5 million fine that will go to charity, will not be allowed to get sponsor exemptions into signature events, won\u2019t be eligible for FedEx Cup bonus money this year and is precluded from getting player equity grants for five years.<\/p>\n<p>More Golf from Sports Illustrated<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. \u2014 The head of the LIV Golf League said Wednesday that he\u2019d have done&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":407372,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[71],"tags":[427,99],"class_list":{"0":"post-407371","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-golf","8":"tag-golf","9":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/407371","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=407371"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/407371\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/407372"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=407371"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=407371"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=407371"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
