{"id":407723,"date":"2026-01-15T00:51:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T00:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/407723\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T00:51:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T00:51:20","slug":"yellowstone-coyotes-square-off-in-aggressive-standoff-biologists-say-is-all-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/407723\/","title":{"rendered":"Yellowstone Coyotes Square Off In Aggressive Standoff Biologists Say Is All Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Two coyotes in standoff over a bison carcass in Yellowstone National Park arched their backs, raised their paws and bared their teeth so aggressively it might be easy to assume they were ready to rip each other apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">It was all for show, biologists told Cowboy State Daily.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Coyotes might tussle with each other, but they don\u2019t get into vicious, winner-take-all fights like wolves sometimes do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Robert\u00a0Crabtree, the founder, chief scientist and president of the Yellowstone Ecological Research Center, has studied coyotes extensively and has immense respect for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Coyotes are a \u201chighly evolved\u201d and \u201ccomplex species,\u201d and many of their behaviors remain a mystery, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Who Gets First Dibs?<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">John Winnie Jr., an associate teaching professor in the Department of Ecology at Montana State University, was in Yellowstone the first weekend in January when he watched the coyote standoff unfold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">At one point, he got a photo of the coyotes facing each other and posturing with intimidating stances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The coyote on the left in the photo was feasting on a bison carcass when the other coyote approached, apparently hoping to take its turn at the buffet, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThe one on the right in the photo approached and started the display. The one that was on the carcass jumped off and started doing the same thing,\u201d Winnie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Later, \u201cit looked like they scuffled a little bit, but didn\u2019t really get into it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In the end, the coyote pictured on the left apparently re-established first dibs and went back to eating. The second coyote retreated, then returned to eat after the first one was finished.<\/p>\n<p>Arched Backs, Grimacing<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Winnie specializes in wolf and elk research, but said he\u2019s also been fascinated by Yellowstone\u2019s coyotes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">The incident with the bison carcass wasn\u2019t the first time he\u2019s seen them display such seemingly weird behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cI see coyotes in Yellowstone do a lot of that arched-back behavior, with their tails tucked, and grimacing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cI\u2019ve always speculated that to be some sort of antagonistic response,\u201d he said, adding that \u201csometimes, it also seems to be a bizarre form of greeting,\u201d Winnie added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">If grimacing and showing teeth is a form of greeting with coyotes, that might be what gets them in trouble with wolves, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cShowing your teeth to a dominant wolf, that\u2019s exactly what you don\u2019t want to say to a wolf,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Coyotes Fight Nicer Than Wolves<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">After seeing the photograph, Crabtree said the coyote on the left was probably the top dog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cMy guess is, that&#8217;s an alpha male on the left \u2014 deep chest, and larger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Coyotes display a range of interesting and sometimes baffling behavior, Crabtree said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThere&#8217;s a whole repertoire of different behaviors at and around carcasses,\u201d\u00a0he said. &#8220;I did a study on that with a grad student and it was so complicated and context-dependent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">&#8220;We just really couldn&#8217;t figure out any regular patterns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">When wolves fight, they frequently maim and even kill each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Yellowstone\u2019s most famous wolf, 907F, died on Christmas Day 2024 from wounds she suffered in a brawl with wolves from a rival pack a few days prior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Coyotes have their disagreements, but typically aren\u2019t out to seriously hurt or kill each other, Crabtree said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cCoyotes fight all the time,\u201d\u00a0he said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s all ritualistic to avoid fatal fighting.
