{"id":407861,"date":"2026-01-15T02:25:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T02:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/407861\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T02:25:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T02:25:07","slug":"oma-designed-new-museum-addition-to-reopen-march-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/407861\/","title":{"rendered":"OMA-designed New Museum addition to reopen March 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/tag\/new-museum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The New Museum<\/a> will reopen to the public on March 21, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/tag\/new-york-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York City<\/a> institution shared this week in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/press-release\/new-museums-oma-designed-building-to-open-on-march-21-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">press statement<\/a>. It was originally slated to reopen fall 2025, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/2025\/02\/oma-new-museum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> by AN last February, but the reopening was prolonged by several months.<\/p>\n<p>The original SANAA flagship building has been closed since March 2024 to accommodate the construction of a 60,000 square foot addition by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/tag\/oma\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OMA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/tag\/cooper-robertson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cooper Robertson<\/a>. The addition will feature the New Museum\u2019s first full-service restaurant, designed by OMA, operated by Henry Rich of the Oberon Group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/tag\/shohei-shigematsu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shohei Shigematsu<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/tag\/rem-koolhaas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rem Koolhaas<\/a> are the project leads at OMA, and Cooper Robertson is the executive architect. OMA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archpaper.com\/2019\/06\/oma-reveals-renderings-new-museum-expansion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first shared<\/a> renderings of the project in 2019.\u00a0The addition doubles the New Museum\u2019s footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Phillips, New Museum\u2019s Toby Devan Lewis Director, said in a statement the \u201cnew 120,000 [square foot] building on the Bowery signals our redoubled commitment to new art and new ideas, and to the museum as an ever-evolving site for risk-taking, collaboration, and experimentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Artist Tschabalala Self has designed an installation for the New Museum\u2019s facade, following in the footsteps of Chris Burden (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsy.net\/artwork\/chris-burden-ghost-ship-installation-view-chris-burden-extreme-measures-at-new-museum-new-york-2013\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ghost Ship<\/a>) and Ugo Rondinone (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/29\/oh-no-new-museum-to-take-down-distinctive-outdoor-sculpture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hell Yes!<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Another sculptural installation by Czech artist Kl\u00e1ra Hosnedlov\u00e1 will be hung from the addition\u2019s internal spiral staircase. Likewise, a commission by Sarah Lucas will live in the plaza outside the building\u2019s main entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Museum officials also announced this week an expanded list of artists that will participate in the addition\u2019s inaugural exhibition, New Humans: Memories of the Future. The exhibition will have more than 200 works by contemporary and late artists.<\/p>\n<p>Pieces by Hito Steyerl, Tau Lewis, and Daria Martin will coalesce near works by El Lissitzky, Hannah H\u00f6ch, Tatsuo Ikeda, and other historic artists as part of the group show.<\/p>\n<p>Free opening weekend tickets will be offered thanks to support from Charlotte Feng Ford, New Museum Trustee.
