Liam Rosenior defended Robert S\u00e1nchez after two glaring errors from the goalkeeper helped condemn Chelsea to a 3-2 defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of Wednesday\u2019s Carabao Cup<\/a> semi-final at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez has improved this season but he was badly at fault for goals from Ben White and Viktor Gy\u00f6keres. The Spaniard\u2019s flap from an early corner allowed White to head Arsenal<\/a> in front and Gy\u00f6keres was able to make it 2-0 after capitalising on another mistake from Chelsea\u2019s No 1.<\/p>\n

However Rosenior, who looked past losing his first home game in charge by taking heart from an injury-hit Chelsea\u2019s battling display, was keen to stand by S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the first goal was disappointing,\u201d the head coach said. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a team goal. It\u2019s not just on Rob. I\u2019m\u00a0asking Rob to do things that he hasn\u2019t done before. When my players make mistakes, I\u2019m accountable. That\u2019s on me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe made a save in the second half that was absolutely world-class. That could have put us out of the tie. He will improve in terms of his understanding. I\u2019ll stay positive with him, as I will with all the group. My job is to help them, not to blame them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chelsea looked down and out after Mart\u00edn Zubimendi made it 3-1 in the 71st minute. However Alejandro Garnacho gave them hope of a comeback by scoring twice after coming on in the second half. Arsenal have work to do when they host the second leg next month.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s game on,\u201d Mikel Arteta said. \u201cThat feeling is not perfect but we have to value what the team has done again. It\u2019s just half-time, and we know the big fight that we\u2019re going to have back at the Emirates because they are a top side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chelsea were without Cole Palmer, Reece James and Malo Gusto through injury, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens through illness and Mois\u00e9s Caicedo through suspension. Rosenior hopes that Palmer will recover from a thigh strain in time to face Brentford on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully, he\u2019ll be available to train on Friday and hopefully he\u2019ll be ready on Saturday,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you play a player too early in January with a minor strain, it can turn to six weeks. I can\u2019t afford to lose Cole Palmer for six weeks because he\u2019s that good.\u201d<\/p>\n
