Jonathan Quick was pulled<\/a> for the second time in three games and the first two-goal game of Gabe Perreault\u2019s young career emerged as perhaps the lone Rangers positive.<\/p>\n\u201cNo s\u2013t,\u201d J.T. Miller said when asked if the four-goal deficit set a negative tone. \u201cWe\u2019d like to not be down 4-0 after the first, but after that, we responded well. Played with some pride after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quick could only do so much when many Senators sequences resembled five-on-Quick chances. <\/p>\n
Vincent Trocheck was called for a holding penalty in the offensive zone 93 seconds into the game, and Drake Batherson opened the scoring for Ottawa less than a minute later.<\/p>\n
Minutes later, Nick Jensen added to the Senators lead when his shot from the point deflected off Braden Schneider\u2019s skate and past Quick. <\/p>\n
Brady Tkachuk ripped a shot off the post and in off a 2-on-1. With 5.7 seconds remaining in the first, Dylan Cozens stepped into a shot from the slot to cap the disastrous frame.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur forecheck wasn\u2019t good enough,\u201d Trocheck said of the first period. \u201cThey were breaking pucks out way too easily, and then they capitalized on their chances. We didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Senators were on the second night of a back-to-back, and yet it took until the middle of the second period for the Rangers to register their 10th shot on goal. <\/p>\n
There were more \u201cFire Drury\u201d chants. Quick was replaced by Spencer Martin after allowing Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot to score early in the second, and the Rangers allowed at least five goals for the third time in four games.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve gotta make sure that we pay attention to detail and we work collectively as a group out there,\u201d head coach Mike Sullivan said. \u201cI think for the first part of the season, a fair number of games, I think we were a pretty stingy team with that collective effort \u2014 especially on the defensive side of the puck. And I think we\u2019ve lost a little bit of that just attention to detail and just collective, cooperative play as a group.\u201d<\/p>\n
In every way, the loss that dropped their home record to 5-13-4 this year turned into an embarrassment, even with a three-goal third period. <\/p>\n

This is what the Rangers put together \u2014 again \u2014 with less than two months until the trade deadline. <\/p>\n
Perreault did score twice, including once off a 2-on-1 rush with Zibanejad while falling across the crease. The Rangers did generate more chances in the third period. <\/p>\n

Spencer Martin only allowed one goal after taking over, and Noah Laba added the sixth goal of his rookie season with just under 10 minutes remaining before Lafreni\u00e8re pulled the Blueshirts within three with 4:02 left.<\/p>\n
But the first period made all of that an afterthought.
