Think back, if you will, to the works of art you cre\u00adat\u00aded at age twelve or thir\u00adteen. For many, per\u00adhaps most of us, our out\u00adput at that stage of ado\u00adles\u00adcence amount\u00aded to direc\u00adtion\u00adless doo\u00addles, chaot\u00adic comics, and a few unsteady-at-best school projects. But then, most of us did\u00adn\u2019t grow up to be Michelan\u00adge\u00adlo. In the late four\u00adteen-eight\u00adies, when that tow\u00ader\u00ading Renais\u00adsance artist was still what we would now call a \u201ctween,\u201d he paint\u00aded The Tor\u00adment of Saint Antho\u00adny<\/a>, a depic\u00adtion of the tit\u00adu\u00adlar reli\u00adgious fig\u00adure beset by demons in the desert. Though based on\u00a0a wide\u00adly known engrav\u00ading, it nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless shows evi\u00addence of rapid\u00adly advanc\u00ading tech\u00adnique, inspi\u00adra\u00adtion, and even\u00a0cre\u00adativ\u00adi\u00adty \u2014 espe\u00adcial\u00adly when placed under the infrared scan\u00adner.<\/p>\n For about half a mil\u00adlen\u00adni\u00adum, The Tor\u00adment of Saint Antho\u00adny\u00a0was\u00adn\u2019t thought to have been paint\u00aded by Michelan\u00adge\u00adlo. As explained in the video from Inspi\u00adrag\u00adgio just below<\/a>, when the paint\u00ading sold at Sothe\u00adby\u2019s in 2008, the buy\u00ader took it to the Met\u00adro\u00adpol\u00adi\u00adtan Muse\u00adum of Art for exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion and clean\u00ading.<\/p>\n \u201cBeneath the lay\u00aders of dirt accu\u00admu\u00adlat\u00aded over the cen\u00adturies,\u201d says the nar\u00adra\u00adtor, \u201ca very par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar col\u00ador palette appeared. \u201cThe tones, the blends, the way the human fig\u00adure was treat\u00aded: all of it began to resem\u00adble the style Michelan\u00adge\u00adlo would use years lat\u00ader in none oth\u00ader than the Sis\u00adtine Chapel<\/a>.\u201d Infrared reflec\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy sub\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly turned up\u00a0pen\u00adti\u00admen\u00adti, or cor\u00adrec\u00adtion marks, a com\u00admon indi\u00adca\u00adtion that \u201ca paint\u00ading is not a copy, but an orig\u00adi\u00adnal work cre\u00adat\u00aded with artis\u00adtic free\u00addom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n It was the Kim\u00adbell Art Muse\u00adum<\/a> in Fort Worth, Texas that first bet big on the prove\u00adnance of The Tor\u00adment of Saint Antho\u00adny. Its new\u00adly hired direc\u00adtor pur\u00adchased the paint\u00ading after turn\u00ading up \u201cnot a sin\u00adgle con\u00advinc\u00ading argu\u00adment against the attri\u00adbu\u00adtion.\u201d Thus acquired, it became \u201cthe only paint\u00ading by Michelan\u00adge\u00adlo locat\u00aded any\u00adwhere in the Amer\u00adi\u00adc\u00adas, and also just one of four easel paint\u00adings attrib\u00aduted to him through\u00adout his entire career,\u201d dur\u00ading most of which he dis\u00adpar\u00adaged oil paint\u00ading itself. About a decade lat\u00ader, and after fur\u00adther analy\u00adsis, the art his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan Gior\u00adgio Bon\u00adsan\u00adti put his con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable author\u00adi\u00adty behind a defin\u00adi\u00adtive con\u00adfir\u00adma\u00adtion that it is indeed the work of the young Michelan\u00adge\u00adlo. There remain doubters, of course, and even the noto\u00adri\u00adous\u00adly uncom\u00adpro\u00admis\u00ading artist him\u00adself may have con\u00adsid\u00adered it an imma\u00adture work unwor\u00adthy of his name.
