Following the call between President Donald Trump and President Claudia Sheinbaum earlier this week,\u00a0Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mexican Foreign Secretary Juan Ram\u00f3n de la Fuente spoke by phone today to address ongoing security challenges facing both countries. The Secretaries reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Mexico partnership, grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty, while acknowledging that more must be done to confront shared threats.<\/p>\n
Both leaders recognized that despite progress, significant challenges remain. They agreed the bilateral Security Implementation Group, next scheduled to meet January 23, must continue delivering tangible actions to strengthen security cooperation and meaningful outcomes to\u00a0counter cartels, and stop the illicit flow of fentanyl and weapons\u00a0from crossing our shared border.\u00a0They agreed to follow up on bilateral initiatives to promote information-sharing and on cross-border security initiatives.<\/p>\n
Secretary Rubio and Foreign Secretary de la Fuente also agreed to convene a Security Ministerial in Washington, D.C. in February, marking the one-year anniversary of initiating a new chapter in bilateral security cooperation. This high-level meeting will provide an opportunity to assess progress, identify gaps, and set clear expectations for further collaboration.<\/p>\n
