Last month, it was reported that Longlegs director Osgood Perkins is among the heavy hitters interested in tackling the next installment<\/a> in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.<\/p>\n

During Neon\u2019s The Next Wave of Horror panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, a fan asked if Perkins would cast a neurodivergent actor as Leatherface since many viewers read the character as being on the autism spectrum\u2026 if, of course, he\u2019s actually involved in the next installment.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy producing partners and I, we went down a path with Texas Chainsaw. To be honest with you, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening with it, but we were certainly in the conversation for it,\u201d Perkins noted, indicating he\u2019s not (yet) officially attached to the franchise.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s lovely about these people who own the rights \u2014 it\u2019s the original writer [Kim Henkel] \u2014 is that they really care about Leatherface.\u201d<\/p>\n

Osgood Perkins continues, \u201cThere\u2019s a fondness about his character and the idea that he saw bad things when he was younger, and because he is neurodivergent, he had his difficulties processing, and that\u2019s when turned him into a quote \u2018monster.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt goes back to Frankenstein or wherever you want to be with monsters that are usually the misunderstood, sensitive type. I think your idea is beautiful. I don\u2019t see any reason why not.\u201d<\/p>\n

The filmmaker also shared a funny anecdote about his experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rights holders provided us with a guide book that they had put together. \u2018These are the things that we think are important, these are the things we\u2019d love to see, these are the things we don\u2019t like,\u2019 so on and so forth,\u201d Perkins explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things was \u2018Leatherface should never have a love interest.\u2019 My partners and I were like, \u2018Well, now you\u2019ve said it!’\u201d<\/p>\n

Other names who have reportedly met with Texas Chainsaw franchise reps Verve include Jordan Peele, J.T. Mollner, Glen Powell, and Taylor Sheridan. At this time, nobody \u2013 Perkins included \u2013 is officially attached to helm the next installment. Stay tuned for more.<\/p>\n
